To assault the hidden abode of reproduction: Critiques to the family from afrofeminism and the gay liberation fronts
The following article is intended to offer a historical account of the institution of the family in order to situate the abolitionist proposals and the Black feminist and queer critiques emerging during the second half of the twentieth century. The first section presents value-form readings of social reproduction, specially focusing on the 2013 article written by Maya González and Jeanne Neton, “The Logic of Gender”, to conceptualize the family a…
The Political Economy of Sexual Identity
This article makes a case for developing a theoretical account of historically determined gendered, trans, and queer epistemologies out of value-form readings on social reproduction. Le sphinx dénaturé: Une écologie du discours
The narrator in E.A. Poe’s “The Sphinx” tells a story in which the huge proportions of an insect call the reader’s attention to the “monstrous” character of democracy. As the narrative develops, however, the sphinx appears as a creature which might be accounted for in a variety of ways. But the telling of the text repeatedly generates whatever line or lines of interpretation are likely to reinstate the enigma in which the sphinx is caught. As it …
Le sublime américain: Rhétorique et inscription du sujet dans The Icebergs de F. E. Church
A dominant mode in mid-XIXth century American painting, the sublime does not involve following a specific program for representing landscape. What it does entail, however, is a peculiar type of relationship between the painter and his pictures. This article discusses the case of The Icebergs by F. E. Church to show how this national icon originates in the “sublime repression” of the painter’s self
Hawthorne au musée: Le savoir et la forme de l’oeuvre dans « A Virtuoso’s Collection »
This paper explores the textual and narrative strategies devised by Hawthorne to subvert the assumption underlying the conception of the past as an object to be reconstructed by historical knowledge. In a museum historically arranged, the succession of events through time can be duplicated as a succession of objects. Hawthorne 's tale represents the museum as a convenient fallacy, and offers the collection as the more adequate paradigm for the wa…
