William Carlos Williams’s The Descent of Winter
A poetic diary inspired by Surrealism, William Carlos Williams’s The Descent of Winter (1928) highlights the haptic dimension of the act of writing: “I desire, my hands / to have it—instead of the feeling / that there is a piece of glazed paper / between me and the paper—invisible” (Williams 1991, 306). This paper argues that The Descent of Winter traces a distinct progression from self-exploration to alterity as Williams establishes a tangible p…
Ekphrasis and Beyond
This paper shows that, just as Brueghel departed from Renaissance canons with his implementation of genre painting, William Carlos Williams’s poetry collection Pictures from Brueghel (1962) challenges the traditional boundaries of ekphrasis as the poet goes beyond mere description and delves into interpretation. Through his innovative approach, Williams not only borrows the compositional techniques and emotional essence of Brueghel’s paintings, b…
There is a sound and alteration »
Combining Raymond Murray Schafer’s works and Marielle Macé’s writings on the disappearance of song from our soundscapes, this study constitutes an ecopoetic and ecoacoustic analysis of the disappearance of birds that accompanies the transition from natural spaces to industrialized places where mechanical rhythms reign in William Carlos Williams’s Adam & Eve & The City (1936). These sonic “alterations” invite readers to listen beyond the soundscap…

Shirley Jaffe
If at first sight the subtitle of the exhibition “Shirley Jaffe: An American Woman in Paris” almost sounds like an oxymoron, the works displayed at the Centre Pompidou this year rather suggested that the artist managed to create a syncretism between French and American cultures. Born in a Jewish family in 1929, Shirley Jaffe lost her father at a young age while her mother spent her time working in order to feed the future artist and her two sibli…
