Changing Fertility Patterns in Poland
This study examines contemporary fertility patterns in Poland with a focus on differences across the rural‐urban continuum. Results reveal higher fertility rates in suburban areas than in core cities and rural districts. The study examines how total fertility rates evolve in relation to other demographic measures, such as marriage and divorce patterns, the share of births outside marriage, and the mean age of mothers at childbirth. By applying sp…
Do variations in anomalous mortality in Europe in fall and winter of 2019–2020 tell us anything on the timing of Sars‐CoV‐2 outbreak
The present study makes a part of the already ample discussion on the subject of identification of the beginnings of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS‐CoV‐2) coronavirus pandemics in the world and considers the following question: do the anomalies in death rates in the earlier periods bring any new knowledge of the subject? With the ultimate purpose of answering this question, spatial differences are analysed of excess mortali…
Powiązania funkcjonalno-przestrzenne w Krakowskim Obszarze Metropolitalnym w świetle dojazdów do pracy
Dominujący do początku lat 90. XX w. kierunek napływu z otaczających terenów wiejskich do miasta centralnego uległ odwróceniu i współcześnie dominuje odpływ z niego do stref zewnętrznych obszaru met…
Przestrzenne zróżnicowanie zmian zaludnienia w Krakowskim Obszarze Metropolitalnym w okresie 1988–2011
Outworking of the Second Demographic Transition
One of the main indicators of the second demographic transition (SDT) is the decline of fertility to below the replacement level (2.1 births per woman). The onset of the SDT in Europe spread across Western Europe in the 1960s and subsequently diffused to other parts of the continent. In Eastern Europe, a fall in total fertility rates below the replacement level was recorded at the beginning of the 1990s and was associated by some researchers with…
Urbanisation and changes in fertility pattern in Poland and in the selected countries of Western and Southern Europe
Urbanisation and changes in fertility pattern in Poland and in the selected countries of Western and Southern Europe Since the beginning of the 1990s profound changes have occurred in reproductive behaviour in Central and Eastern Europe. They involve a sudden fall in the fertility rate, accompanied by an increase in the age of mothers giving birth to their first child, and a growth in the percentage of extramarital births. A similar course of cha…
Double transitions? regional patterns of population ageing in poland
The number and geographical distribution of the aged, and how the distribution changes over time, have captured the attention of geographical gerontologists; the complexity and spatially differentiated nature of ageing is of considerable practical and theoretical import. This article seeks to link the traditional concerns of population geography to the social and spatial relations between old people, their health and places of residence and care.…
A comparative analysis of population ageing in urban and rural areas of England and Wales, and Poland over the last three census intervals
Population ageing has become a feature of many European and other Western countries over the last two decades as older people become more dominant in their demographic structures. This trend has the potential for important economic and social impacts, which are likely to be played out in both national and local contexts. This paper demonstrates the feasibility of comparing regional‐level population data over a historical period, and of tracking c…
