An integrated public health response to an outbreak of Murray Valley encephalitis virus infection during the 2022–2023 mosquito season in Victoria
Introduction: Murray Valley encephalitis virus (MVEV) is a mosquito-borne flavivirus known to cause infrequent yet substantial human outbreaks around the Murray Valley region of south-eastern Australia, resulting in significant mortality. Methods: The public health response to MVEV in Victoria in 2022-2023 included a climate informed pre-season risk assessment, and vector surveillance with mosquito trapping and laboratory testing for MVEV. Human …
A Colony without a Cough? A Bioarchaeological Exploration of Tuberculosis at the Eighteenth-Century Fortress of Louisbourg, Canada
A Bioarchaeological Exploration of Adolescent Males at the Eighteenth-Century Fortress of Louisbourg, Nova Scotia, Canada
Using skeletal remains from the eighteenth-century Fortress of Louisbourg, this study aimed to explore whether the adolescent ( 25 years) male experiences were synonymous in this New France colony. Additionally, this study also considered the geographic origins of these adolescent males to better understand their lived experience at Louisbourg. For this study, skeletal remains from 13 adolescent male individuals (16–25 years) were compared to 24 …
Comparing biological and pathological factors affecting osteocalcin concentrations in archaeological skeletal remains
Paleoproteomics and the study of ancient proteins has become an important consideration in bioarchaeological research as we seek to understand the relationship between the physical skeleton and its underlying biochemistry. Osteocalcin is an abundant, non-collagenous protein that is accessible archaeologically due to its affinity for hydroxyapatite in bone. Manufactured by the osteoblast cells during normal bone metabolism, osteocalcin is inherent…
Empowering Families in Difficult Times
The Women’s Economic Stability Initiative developed and evaluated a new model to help low-income, single women with children make progress toward economic stability through vocational training/educational attainment (particularly in fields traditionally dominated by men), financial assistance for reliable childcare, transportation, and housing, and life coaching/case management using an empowerment approach. During the first 3 years of the initia…
