  • Foreclosure, Disclosure, and Political Engagement: A Collaborative Reflection on Scholar-Activism in the Neoliberal University

Open Access•Noor Amr, Madeline Ba et al.•ARTICLE•Migration and Society•2024•References: 11

Considering the increased institutionalization of scholar-activist research across many university contexts, this reflection critically engages the assumed harmony between scholarship and activism in migration research. Collaboratively authored by eight academics at various disciplinary, geographic, gendered/racialized, and career-level junctures, the article examines the commitments, aspirations, anxieties, and contradictions of activist scholar…

  • Makeshift activism and the afterlives of refugee welcome in Covid-19 Italy

    Open Access•Elisa Lanari•ARTICLE•Critique of Anthropology•2024•References: 26

This article captures a shift occurring at the peripheries of the Italian asylum system where, as reception infrastructures are progressively gutted, dismantled, and transformed into security apparatuses, local organizations refocus their efforts on helping refugees and asylum seekers carve out spaces of agency and autonomy in the time-space after institutional reception. • Latina M(other)work against racism: Living with legal precarity in suburban Atlanta

    Open Access•Elisa Lanari•ARTICLE•Ethnic and Racial Studies•2023

It draws on 18 months of ethnographic research to show how women derived a sense of empowerment from becoming involved in their children's schooling. They also turned schools into “counter-spaces” of sanctuary and support for fellow Latinx pare…

Based on original ethnographic material, this piece explores the relationship between legally precarious Latina migrants and the co-ethnic activists serving as their advocates and mentors, treating this relationship as generative of a dynamic process of being and becoming political for migrant women and youth in the metropolitan US South. I adopt an intersectional and intergenerational feminist lens to analyze Latino educational and civic engagem…

  • Envisioning a New City Center: Time, Displacement, and Atlanta's Suburban Futures

    Open Access•Elisa Lanari•ARTICLE•City & Society•2019•Cited by: 7•References: 34

In the fast-growing, gentrifying metro Atlanta region, poor people and immigrants are simultaneously being priced out of inner city neighborhoods and displaced by suburban revitalization initiatives. Affordable housing activists struggle to adapt their strategies to the place and pace of redevelopment. In this context, focusing on time becomes increasingly crucial to understanding people's varying experiences and responses to these phenomena. I d…
