A Swedish notice from the middle of the 18th century on the Jews of New York
Per Kalm was born in 1716 in Sweden, the son of a family of Lutheran clergymen from the province of Ostrobothnia. He began his studies in natural sciences at Åbo Akademi in 1735, moved to Uppsala University in 1740, and soon became one of Carl Gustaf Linné’s foremost disciples. Pehr Kalm was considered as one of the purest exponents of 18th century Enlightenment and rationalism in Sweden/Finland. In October 1747 he commenced his journey to Americ…

Om studiet av påskhaggadan
Haggadah shel pesach is perhaps the most well-read and popular Jewish text. The reasons for its popularity are many: the haggadah is short, it is recited in homes in the celebration of pesach and therefore the text was needed in every home. Often two versions of the haggadah are needed&&one in Hebrew and one in the local language spoken by the people. This popular text resulted in a rich tradition of explanations and interpretations on the exodus…
Rabbinatet i historiskt perspektiv
The article gives a survey of the rabbinate from a historical perspective. The rabbinate is defined as the institution whose representatives – the rabbis – have taken care of the maintenance of the Jewish identity and of the leadership for many of the internal Jewish functions. The article commences with a description of the emergence of the rabbinate in Yabne under the leadership of Yochanan ben Zakkai, and the patriarchate later located in Tibe…
Litterära former i Mishna
The article furnishes a survey of some literary forms in Mishna, based on the studies by Neusner and Goldberg. After some general remarks on the study of Mishna from a formal point of view, the survey begins with an introductory example. MPesahîm 10 is given in translation, followed by a short commentary pointing out some of the literary characteristics of the chapter. The description of literary forms unfolds in the following way: Halachic sayin…

Dancing, here defined as “rhythmical movement of any part or all parts of the body in accordance with some scheme of individual or concerted action”, is an universal human activity. The focus of this article is religious dance of ceremonial character in the context of Hasidism. Hasidism is an outgoing movement bearing strong characteristics of Jewish mysticism, kabbalah. Hasidism made ideas traditionally emphasized within kabbalah more known and …
The priest anointed for battle
The reason why I undertook to study the theme “The priest anointed for battle” was that while studying texts having to do with the Messiah, Son of Joseph, often called the Anointed for battle § 1 §, I repeatedly came upon rabbinic texts which also dealt with the one Anointed for battle, but which seemed to deal with another person, a priest. Although scholars, who had previously noted this phenomenon were certain that the texts dealt with two dif…
Serubbabels bok
Sefer Serubabbel is the name of a pseudoephigraphical work which probably originates from the 7th century in Palestine or its surroundings. The importance of the tractate is stressed, with the reference to the eschatological schema it describes and the personages it inaugurates into the schema, influencing almost all later Jewish writing on the subject. The inner layer of the text constitutes the frame narrative, which describes the acts of Serub…
