  • LiDAR-Based Storytelling About a Historical Industrial Landscape in Southern Middle Tennessee

    Open Access•Carla Klehm, Camille Westmont et al.•ARTICLE•American Anthropologist•2025•Referências: 63

Industrial landscapes play deep into the imagination of American consciousness, with coal mining rooted in Appalachian culture as both identity and political flashpoint. In Tennessee, coal mining coincided with the convict leasing system that operated across the American South during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. At the Lone Rock Stockade, located in Grundy Lakes State Park, thousands of primarily African American male prisoners were fo…

  • Education as Liberation

    Open Access•Camille Westmont•ARTICLE•Archaeologies•2024•Referências: 31

The working classes have been overlooked as a population that could benefit from social-justice-oriented critical public archaeology approaches. The Anthracite Heritage Program sought to address this gap by targeting educational attainment among students in the historically working class, chronically underserved northeastern Pennsylvania region. Public archaeology initiatives to promote interest and knowledge about undergraduate education reveale…

  • An Archaeology of Convict Leasing in the American South

Camille Westmont, Cayla B Colclasure•ARTICLE•Journal of African Diaspora…•2023

Between the mid-nineteenth and mid-twentieth centuries, thousands of men, women, and children in the American South were forced to labor for private businesses and individuals under the convict lease system. This system disproportionately impacted Black men and boys, although it also ensnared Black women and girls as well as poor white men, women, and children. Motivated by the financial gains achieved through leasing prisoners, states ensured th…

  • Critical Public Archaeology

Terry P Brock, Jeffery Burton et al.•BOOK•Critical Public Archaeology•2022

Critical approaches to public archaeology have been in use since the 1980s, however only recently have archaeologists begun using critical theory in conjunction with public archaeology to challenge dominant narratives of the past. This volume brings together current work on the theory and practice of critical public archaeology from Europe and the United States to illustrate the ways that implementing critical approaches can introduce new underst…

  • Assessing the adaptive resilience of twentieth-century post-industrial fishing landscapes in Siglufjörður, Iceland

    Camille Westmont•ARTICLE•Landscape Research•2021•Referências: 34

Over the last 130 years, the landscapes of northern Iceland’s fishing villages have experienced repeated reconfigurations based on changing technology, cultural developments, and ecological shifts. However, the interconnected nature of these changes and their role in enabling industrial success have not been systematically assessed. This project aimed to evaluate the ecological and cultural histories of the herring industry of northern Iceland vi…

  • Faux materials and aspirational identity

    Open Access•Camille Westmont•ARTICLE•Journal of Material Culture•2020•Citada por: 3•Referências: 11

The introduction of synthetic and semi-synthetic materials in the late 19th and early 20th centuries opened a world of new possibilities for consumer objects. The abundance of new goods ushered in a new age of consumption: one in which identities were not only expressed through material culture, but could be actively made through material culture. One avenue that has not been thoroughly explored is the role of synthetic and semi-synthetic objects…

  • The place to be

Camille Westmont, Andreas Antelid•ARTICLE•Journal of Community Archaeology…•2018•Citada por: 3•Referências: 4

This article presents two case studies in which public archaeology was used to attempt to shift local perspectives on migration and migrants. The two archaeology projects, which took place in the United States and Sweden, emphasized participants' connections to places and shared experiences in the past rather than to ethnic groups in an attempt to combat the use of heritage and archaeological interpretations as a mechanism for xenophobia. Here we…
