  • A dyadic model of investments: Partner effects on commitment

    Open Access•Anthony E Coy, Jody L Davis et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Social and Personal…•2019•Cited by: 3•References: 46

A dyadic approach to studying relationship dynamics yields considerably more insights than examining each partner separately. Yet relatively little research has examined dyadic models of commitment, despite commitment being essential to relationship persistence. Accordingly, we tested a dyadic version of the investment model of commitment. In two cross-sectional studies of couples and one experiment, we tested the role of partner investments and …

  • Socioeconomic indicators as predictors of smoking cessation among Spanish-Speaking Mexican Americans

Christine Vinci, Lin Guo et al.•ARTICLE•Ethnicity and Health•2017•Cited by: 1•References: 5

Objective: Smoking-related illnesses are the leading cause of death among Latinos, and within this ethnic group, Mexican Americans are the largest subgroup in the U.S. Understanding the factors associated with successful smoking cessation could inform interventions for this population. Although socioeconomic status (SES) is a powerful predictor of cessation outcomes in the general U.S. population, it has generally been a poor predictor of quittin…

  • Predictors of motivation to comply with social referents regarding one's romantic relationship

    Open Access•Paul E Etcheverry, Christopher R Agnew•ARTICLE•Personal Relationships•2016

This research examined predictors of motivation to comply with social referents regarding one's romantic relationship. Two variables are argued to predict motivation to comply with the opinions of social network members: (a) social consequences of compliance and (b) perceived relationship expertise. Three studies examined the association of these variables with motivation to comply. Study 1 used survey research to demonstrate that these variables…

  • Predictors of friend approval for romantic relationships

    Open Access•Paul E Etcheverry, Benjamin Le et al.•ARTICLE•Personal Relationships•2013

Three studies (1 correlational and 2 experiments) applied the investment model to explain social network approval for others' romantic relationships. Study 1 supported the prediction that friends' perceived satisfaction and perceived alternatives were predictive of their approval for target relationships, while perceived investments was not a significant predictor. Studies 2 and 3 employed experimental manipulations of perceived satisfaction to t…

  • Attachment and the investment model: Predictors of relationship commitment, maintenance, and persistence

    Open Access•Paul E Etcheverry, Benjamin Le et al.•ARTICLE•Personal Relationships•2012

This research examines adult attachment and the investment model. Study 1 tests anxiety and avoidance predicting romantic relationship commitment, mediated by satisfaction, alternatives, and investments. Additional studies added outcomes of relationship maintenance (Study 2) and persistence (Study 3). In all 3 studies, satisfaction, alternatives, and investments mediated the associations between anxiety and avoidance and relationship commitment. …

  • Exploring the link between racial discrimination and substance use: What mediates? What buffers

Frederick X Gibbons, Paul E Etcheverry et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality and Social…•2010•Cited by: 27

The relation between perceived racial discrimination and substance use was examined in 2 studies that were based on the prototype-willingness model (Gibbons, Gerrard, & Lane, 2003). Study 1, using structural equation modeling, revealed prospective relations between discrimination and use 5 years later in a panel of African American adolescents (M age 10.5 years at Time 1 [T1]) and their parents. For both groups, the relation was mediated by anger…

  • Perceived versus reported social referent approval and romantic relationship commitment and persistence

    Open Access•Paul E Etcheverry, Benjamin Le et al.•ARTICLE•Personal Relationships•2008

The current study examined social network influence processes on romantic relationship outcomes by obtaining the reported opinions of social referents as well as romantic relationship members’ perceptions of social network members’ opinions. Participants were 254 (151 women) college students from the United States involved in romantic relationships along with a male and female friend who all completed surveys regarding the participants’ romantic …

  • Thinking about commitment: Accessibility of commitment and prediction of relationship persistence, accommodation, and willingness to sacrifice

    Open Access•Paul E Etcheverry, Benjamin Le•ARTICLE•Personal Relationships•2005

Research has demonstrated that more accessible cognitive constructs (e.g., attitudes, stereotypes) are more likely to influence thoughts and behaviors. The current research applies a social cognition framework to the prediction of romantic relationship persistence (i.e., “stay‐leave” behavior), accommodation, and willingness to sacrifice. Conceptualizing commitment as a partially cognitive construct and following from social cognition and attitud…

  • Subjective norms and the prediction of romantic relationship state and fate

    Open Access•Paul E Etcheverry, Christopher R Agnew•ARTICLE•Personal Relationships•2004

This study examined whether subjective norms are associated with commitment to a romantic relationship and with remaining in that relationship over time. Subjective norms are defined in the context of relationships as the perceived normative beliefs of a social network member regarding a given relationship weighted by the motivation to comply with that network member. In a longitudinal study of college students involved in dating relationships, s…
