The Inuit’s Offer to Canada’s Black Governor General
This article revisits when former Canadian Governor General, Michaëlle Jean, consumed raw seal heart at an Inuit community feast. This event provides important insight about cultural meanings around food and the power relationships imbued in culinary traditions. It also provides an opportunity to investigate how food has been theorized in academic research, and how this scholarship is potentially complicit in the derisive responses directed at Je…
Factors influencing commitment to maintaining long-term exercise in adults over the age of 50

Although both of these services are vitally important, some groups such as aged immigrants face a number of barriers that may limit their access to these services. This paper examines and discusses two related areas of the service sector – health care and leisure – and the growing c…

Through a detailed content analysis of the three Canadian peer-reviewed leisure studies journals – Leisure/Loisir,…
I am not too old to play” – The Past, Present and Future of 50 and Over Organized Sport Leagues
The ageing population in Canada is dramatically increasing. According to recent demographic projections, roughly 20 percent of Canada’s population will consist of people over the age 65 by 2024. Indeed, the senior population is expected to surpass that of children under the age of 14 by 2017. This growth of the senior cohort signals opportunities for individuals over the age of 50 to challenge stereotypes and embrace active living. Organized spor…
