Informační moment v literární teorii a české experimentální poezii 60. let
This study aims to reconstruct the impact of information theory (and cybernetics) on literary theory (semiotics) during the 1950s and 1960s, as well as the directions in which the same paradigm came to inspire 1960s Czech experimental poetry. Given the limitations of information theory vis-à-vis some crucial questions of communication, what was the foundation of this inspiration? The first part of the study concentrates on various important modif…
The Bible in the Sixteenth Century
A distinguished group of authors here illuminate a broad spectrum of themes in the history of biblical interpretation. Originally published in 1990, these essays take as their common ground the thesis that the intellectual and religious life of the sixteenth century cannot be understood without attention to the preoccupation of sixteenth-century humanists and theologians with the interpretation of the Bible. Topics explored include Jewish exegesi…

Medialita: Některé základní otázky teorie a historie médií
Studie podává – především z pohledu teorie a dějin litera…
The Malmedy Massacre: The War Crimes Trial Controversy
On December 17, 1944, during the opening days of the Battle of the Bulge, a Kampfgruppe (battle group) from the 1st SS Panzer Division Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler (LSSAH) murdered a group of captured American soldiers at the Baugnez crossroads near the town of Malmedy, Belgium. An investigation of the massacre and the battle group’s other atrocities led to a trial known as the Malmedy Case. The U.S. Army prosecuted the Sixth SS Panzer Army comm…
Learning to Fight and Fighting to Learn: Practitioners and the Role of Unit Publications in VIII Fighter Command 1943–1944
A military cannot hope to improve in wartime if it cannot learn. Ideally, in wartime, formal learning ceases and the application of knowledge begins. But this is optimistic. In 1942, USAAF Eighth Air Force assumed it had the means necessary for victory. In reality, its technique and technology were only potentially – rather than actually – effective. What remained was to create the practice of daylight bombing – to learn. This article (1) recover…
The Luftwaffe's Way of War: German Air Force Doctrine, 1911-1945
Stopped at Stalingrad: The Luftwaffe and Hitler's Defeat in the East, 1942-1943
By the time Hitler declared war on the Soviet Union in 1941, he knew that his military machine was running out of fuel. In response, he launched Operation Blau, a campaign designed to protect Nazi oilfields in Romania while securing new ones in the Caucasus. All that stood in the way was Stalingrad. Here, Joel Hayward chronicles Luftwaffe operations during that campaign, focusing on Hitler's use of the air force as a tactical rather than strategi…
The Life and Thought of John Gill (1697-1771): A Tercentennial Appreciation
This volume of essays focuses on the thought of John Gill, the doyen of High Calvinism in the transatlantic Baptist community of the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Among the topics covered are Gill's trinitarian theology, his soteriological views, his Baptist ecclesiology, and his use of Scripture. Other papers are more focused, examining, for instance, his clash with the Arminian Methodist leader John Wesley over the issues of predes…
Close air support: The German, British, and American experiences, 1918–1941
The history of air power in Germany, Britain, and the United States during the interwar period provides excellent examples of successful military innovation. To some degree, each air force combined the lessons learned in World War I, postwar theoretical development, and increasingly advanced aviation technology into viable doctrines, weapons systems, and combat formations. The creation of a long-range heavy day bombardment force by the United Sta…
