  • Unit-log-symmetric models

    Open Access•Roberto Vila, N Balakrishnan et al.•ARTICLE•Quality & Quantity•2024

  • The effects of type and token frequency on word length

Open Access•Thomas Berg, Peter Zörnig et al.•ARTICLE•Glottotheory•2022

Inspired by Zipf’s Law of Abbreviation, previous research was mostly directed at the interaction of word length and token frequency. Much less is known about the relationship of word length and type frequency, let alone about the differential impact of type and token frequency on word length. These issues are examined on the basis of a non-representative sample of 10 languages. The token frequency analysis reveals that 8 of the 10 languages show …

  • Classification of Serbian texts based on lexical characteristics and multivariate statistical analysis

Peter Zörnig, Emmerich Kelih et al.•ARTICLE•Glottotheory•2016

We study lexical properties of different Serbian text types (poems, rock songs, different kinds of spoken language, prose, scientific and journalistic texts). We investigate characteristics and text parameters based on the frequency of word forms (relative frequencies, repeat rate, h-point and related indices). Relations between parameters are studied in order to identify the principal characteristics. We also apply techniques of multivariate ana…

  • On Consensus Strings in Text Analysis

    Peter Zörnig, Gabriel Altmann•ARTICLE•Glottotheory•2016

The present paper is a pilot study introducing a concept of computational biology – the closest string problem (CSP) – into linguistics. In quantitative studies, texts can be represented as sequences, and for any given set of sequences one can solve a CSP. The solution is called a consensus string (CS), which is a sequence that is „as close as possible to all the given strings“. In this article we solve some CSP’s resulting from the study of a Hu…

  • A Sequential Activity Measure for Texts and Speeches

    Peter Zörnig, Gabriel Altmann•ARTICLE•Glottotheory•2016

We introduce a new indicator for activity in written or spoken language, defined by the number of verbs appearing before the adjectives. The concept is applied to Italian presidential speeches

  • Unified Modeling of Length in Language

    Peter Zörnig•ARTICLE•Australian Journal of Linguistics•2016•Cited by: 1

The search for mathematical models is the first task of quantitative linguistics. The next step is the testing of a model on as many languages and phenomena as possible. A full confirmation of the
