  • ‘The Grove is our Temple.’ Contested Representations of Kaavu in Kerala, South India

    Yasushi Uchiyamada•CHAPTER•Social Life of Trees•2021

Strangers who come to Kerala find the landscape densely greened with trees and groves. The Reverend Samuel Mateer, who worked in the princely state of Travancore in South Kerala during the mid-nineteenth century as a missionary of the London Missionary Society, was no exception. As the Reverend Mateer observes, Malayali house gardens are crowded with graceful coconut trees. But at a closer look, one may find a meagre and undernourished coconut tr…

  • Architecture of immanent power. Truth and nothingness in a Japanese bureaucratic machine

    Open Access•Yasushi Uchiyamada•ARTICLE•Social Anthropology•2004

  • Industrial Sewing Machines, Work-Disciplines and Aesthetics: Of anthropological clichés and a letter from Bohol

    Open Access•Yasushi Uchiyamada•ARTICLE•Critique of Anthropology•2000•Cited by: 3•References: 15

People strive for 'better lives'. Young women in Bohol temporarily out-migrate to Manila and other urban centres for economic and aesthetic reasons, which are both complementary and contradictory. Their temporary out-migration is a kind of rite of passage in which they transform themselves into beautiful and marriageable women in far-away places in the proximity of beautiful people and things in the city. The modernizing state translates the ques…

  • Soil, self, resistance: Late-modernity and locative spirit possession in Kerala

Open Access•Yasushi Uchiyamada•CHAPTER•La possession en Asie du Sud•1999

I present a place-centred and low-caste view of spirit affliction/possession with reference to person-kuṭumpam (descent group)-soil continuity and interaction in late-modern Kerala, where previous boundary processes have been subjugated to a new set of boundary processes that mixed-up what was formerly unmixable. The person-kuṭumpam-soil consubstantiality, which is expressed in mortuary rituals, contradicts with the modern praxis of people-state-…

  • Maid to Order in Hong Kong: Stories of Filipina Workers

Yasushi Uchiyamada•REVIEW•Journal of the Royal Anthropologica…•1999•Cited by: 2

As middle-class Chinese women have entered the Hong Kong work force in unprecedented numbers over the past two decades, the demand for foreign domestic workers has soared. Approximately 150,000 individuals now serve on two-year contracts, and the vast majority are women from the Philippines. Nicole Constable tells their story. Interweaving her analysis with anecdotal evidence collected in interviews with individual domestic workers, she shows how…
