Open Access•Galen H Smith, Cicily Hampton et al.•ARTICLE•Politics and the Life Sciences•2023•Cited by: 3•References: 13

Three North Carolina Medicaid surveys conducted from 2000 to 2012 reported increasing numbers of Hispanic children enrolled in Medicaid and much lower trust in providers expressed by their adult caregiver respondents compared with responses for non-Hispanic Black and White children. To verify and explain this apparent trust chasm, we used bivariate and regression analyses. The variables employed included trust (dependent variable); child's race/e…

  • Adolescent Use and Perceptions of Juul and Other Pod-Style e-Cigarettes: A Qualitative Study to Inform Prevention

    Open Access•Kimberly G Wagoner, Jessica L King et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

JUUL, a discrete pod-style e-cigarette, popular among adolescents, delivers high levels of nicotine. Limited research has assessed social and environmental influences that contribute to use of JUUL and other pod-style devices. We examined how these factors, as well as individual characteristics, shape adolescent use. Twenty-nine middle and high school students participated in six focus groups in June 2019 (58.6% female, 65.5% White, 27.6% Hispani…

Current text-only cigarette warning labels (long-term, loss-framed messages) may not motivate positive changes in smoking behavior. The current project was a cross-sectional study examining the effects of tailored cigarette warnings on perceived message effectiveness (PME) in adult smokers ( n = 512) conducted using Amazon Mechanical Turk (M-Turk) in January-February 2020. Participants were an average age of 40.7 (SD = 11.6), with the majority of…

  • The voyage of a navigator: An aspiring scholar’s inside observations on the Affordable Care Act’s rocky roll-out in North Carolina

    Open Access•Hollie L Tripp•ARTICLE•Politics and the Life Sciences•2015•References: 7

North Carolina, a federally facilitated marketplace under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), stumbled in 2013 when opening its health-insurance exchange. Trouble was easy to foresee, as North Carolina had instituted a law barring any state agency from assisting enrollment in health-insurance plans made available through the ACA. Trained workers were needed to help citizens and legal immigrants "navigate" to these plans. Some of these "navigators" cou…
