  • Investigating the Function of an Archaic-Period Earthwork Using Microartifacts

    Anthony L Ortmann, Caroline Schmidt•ARTICLE•Southeastern Archaeology•2016•Cited by: 5•References: 5

The functions of Archaic-period mounds in the Lower Mississippi River valley are generally poorly understood. Poverty Point's Mound C provides a unique opportunity to examine the function of one Late Archaic mound. Archaeological excavation of Mound C revealed a complex construction sequence consisting of numerous, thin, flat-topped construction stages. The presence of cultural features on the surfaces of some stages suggests these mound stage su…

  • Concurrent and predictive validity of physical activity measurement items commonly used in clinical settings– data from SCAPIS pilot study

    Open Access•Örjan Ekblom, Elin Ekblom‐Bak et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2015

Assessing PA patterns using self-report measures results in methodological problems when trying to predict individual risk for the metabolic syndrome, as the concurrent validity generally was low. However, several of the investigated questions may be useful for assessing risk at a group level, showing better predictive validity

  • Self-efficacy regarding physical activity is superior to self-assessed activity level, in long-term prediction of cardiovascular events in middle-aged men

Open Access•Göran Bergström, Mats Börjesson et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2015

Self-efficacy to perform physical activity was strongly and independently associated with cardiovascular events and was superior to self-assessed physical activity in predicting cardiovascular events during 13-years of follow-up in a group of middle-aged men, without known CVD or treatment with cardiovascular drugs

  • Deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon

    Open Access•Caroline Schmidt, Caroline A Schmidt et al.•ARTICLE•Social & Legal Studies•2014•Cited by: 10•References: 11

This article investigates how land users perceive laws restricting deforestation and forest degradation, notably Brazil’s National Forest Code, and how legal meaning emerges as place specific to influence their legal compliance. Interviews were held with land users in Acre state, a municipality with high rates of deforestation located in the forest frontier of the Brazilian Amazon. Critical legal geography was applied as a theoretical framework t…
