  • The Mass Balance of Circum-Arctic Glaciers and Recent Climate Change

Open Access•Julian A Dowdeswell, Jon Ove Hagen et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1997

The sum of winter accumulation and summer losses of mass from glaciers and ice sheets (net surface mass balance) varies with changing climate. In the Arctic, glaciers and ice caps, excluding the Greenland Ice Sheet, cover about 275,000 km 2 of both the widely glacierized archipelagos of the Canadian, Norwegian, and Russian High Arctic and the area north of about 60°N in Alaska, Iceland, and Scandinavia. Since the 1940s, surface mass balance time-…

  • Black Suburbanization and Housing Quality in Atlanta

    Robert H Thomas•ARTICLE•Journal of Urban Affairs•1984•Cited by: 2•References: 1

During the 1970s, several researchers presented evidence that black suburbanization was increasing in many U.S. metropolitan areas. There was also evidence that blacks were not significantly improving their housing quality through suburbanization. This paper examines 1980 census data to determine whether black population movement in Atlanta is a suburbanization phenomenon leading to better quality housing. Several dozen census tracts are defined …

  • A Model for Holocene Retreat of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet

    Open Access•Robert Thomas, Robert H Thomas et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1978

Marine ice sheets are grounded on land which was below sea level before it became depressed under the ice-sheet load. They are inherently unstable and, because of bedrock topography after depression, the collapse of a marine ice sheet may be very rapid. In this paper equations are derived that can be used to make a quantitative estimate of the maximum size of a marine ice sheet and of when and how rapidly retreat would take place under prescribed…
