Urban climate action plans in the United States
Textual content analysis was conducted for 203 US urban climate actions plans. • The analysis was stratified by time, region of the US, and city size. • Plans generally placed a heavy emphasis on reducing emissions. • More recent plans were more holistic and mentioned equity more frequently. Cities within the United States (US) have sought to address climate change by creating local Climate Action Plans (CAPs). This paper explores the state of ur…
Optimization of Embodied Energy and Construction Cost of Low-Income Housing in Urban India
India is the most populous country in the world, having a population of 1.42 billion in 2022. It is urbanizing rapidly, with the present urbanization level at about 35%, which is expected to reach about 40% by 2030. There was an estimated demand of 11.22 million homes in urban India in 2017, of which 95% was in the affordable housing sector. This demand is expected to increase with the current urbanization trends. The Indian government is promoti…
Planning for green infrastructure along the Gulf Coast
Rapid expansion and development of urban areas in coastal communities degrades ecosystems and increases vulnerability to natural disasters and the effects of climate change. To minimize these negative impacts, some municipalities have adopted “green infrastructure” planning to protect their cities through greenways, wetlands, and open spaces. This research identifies communities that have engaged in green infrastructure planning in the Mississipp…
Emergence of sub-optimal land utilization patterns in Indian cities
This paper examines the urban morphology of Ahmedabad, a large and rapidly growing Indian city, to determine land utilization efficiency. It provides a nuanced understanding of land consumption patterns in public and private domains, and how sub-optimal land development patterns emerge. Urban form parameters analysed include public streets, building footprints, and public and private open spaces. The results show that land utilization is sub-opti…
Scenic landscapes, visual accessibility and premium values in a single family housing market
This article uses a hedonic modelling approach to assess the implicit willingness to pay for the visual accessibility of voluntarily protected, privately owned, scenic lands based on single family houses. These lands are perpetually protected to preserve natural, historic, and scenic characteristics. The capitalized house premium was captured using a visual accessibility variable, which was a combined weighted measure of ‘view’ and ‘proximity,’ r…
