Comparison of the Function of Exchange in Couples of Similar and Differing Physical Attractiveness
Couples (22 young, married, 18 young unmarried) completed the Exchange Orientation Scale, which measures how much individuals believe equality of exchange should characterize their social relationships, as well as the Norman Personality Trait Scale, which gives measures for the self and ideal-self. Couples also rated their sexual satisfaction, their partners' physical attractiveness, their own attractiveness, and had their photographs evaluated f…

Gender Differences in Love, Sex, and Motivation for Sex
In 1989 Sprague and Quadagno reported a significant interaction between sex and age for “motive for sexual intercourse” (affection-closeness vs physical release). Young men exceeded women in physical release as primary motive for sex, but women exceeded men in this choice at an older age. We conducted a modified replication, and we also studied Rubin's Love Scale, sexual interest, frequency of sexual arousal, and sexual enjoyment. Analysis did no…
On Exchange Theory, Androcentrism and Sex Stereotypy
Wood's article (1995) was evaluated for its comments on exchange theory and male-female differences in relationships. The author, in disagreement with Wood, believes that despite its androcentric origins, exchange theory, of itself, is not androcentric. Moreover, it is neither necessarily oriented toward personal gain nor lacking in process, as Wood claims. Last, the research literature does not warrant talking about men and women as having basic…
Gender differences in power and self‐disclosure in dating and married couples
The relationship between power and self‐disclosure was studied for 20 dating and 20 married couples. Power and self‐disclosure scales (of feelings and of accomplishments) were constructed and administered individually. We hypothesized that: (1) Women disclose more about feelings than men. (2) Men disclose more about accomplishments than women. (3) Power is positively correlated with disclosure of accomplishments. (4) Power is negatively correlate…
The public's knowledge about psychologists and other mental health professionals

Respondents defined each MHP and reported their satisfaction with treatment, which MHP they would recommend, their referral sourc…

Who Will Marry Whom
The central focus of this book is the presentation of Murstein's Stimulus-Value-Role (SVR) of mate-selection, an elaboration of the popular Kerckhoff and Davis filter theory and the Lewis Premarital Dyadic Formation (PDF) framework of mateselection. The SVR postulates that individuals select partners, first, on the basis of various stimulus characteristics (physical attractiveness, etc.); second, on similarity in values; and, third, on how cempat…

A Note on a Common Error in Attraction and Marriage Research
A recent article by Centers (1975b) illustrates an error consistently made by many researchers. Those who immediately come to mind are Blazer, 1963; 1 Centers, 1975a; and Murstein, 1961.2 A more extensive survey of the literature would increase this list considerably. The error has to do with the attempt to establish a control group to compare against an actual group's correlation. For example, Centers (1975b), correlates men's and women's scores…

Qualities of Desired Spouse: A Cross-Cultural Comparison Between French and American College Students
Through factor analyses, the nine most potent dimensions of marital expectation for an American and a French college sample were obtained. A comparison of the factorial structure of American and French men showed moderate to high similarity. The American and French women also showed dimensional similarity though there was greater divergence in the variance accounted for by similarly labeled factors. The item by item comparison between the two sam…

Stimulus. Value. Role: A Theory of Marital Choice
A three-stage theory of marital choice is presented called Stimulus-Value-Role. The first (stimulus) stage consists of value satisfaction obtained by visual, auditory, and non-interactional means. The second (value) stage consists of values appreciated through verbal interaction, and the third (role) stage involves the ability of the couple to function in mutually assigned roles. Among the topics considered are whether similars or opposites marry…

Empirical Tests of Role, Complementary Needs, and Homogamy Theories of Marital Choice
Ninety-nine couples, either engaged or going steady, received a revised form of the Edwards Personal Preference Schedule taken under the sets Self, Ideal Self, Fiance(e), and Ideal Spouse. It was hypothesized that couples chose each other on the basis of role compatibility as seen by the respective members of the couples (inter-perceptions) and as viewed by one member alone (intra-perceptions); both hypotheses were supported. It was further hypot…

Person Perception and Courtship Progress among Premarital Couples
Predicated on the belief that person perception was related to courtship progress and that men are more important to courtship progress than women, a college sample of 98 premarital couples received a shortened form of the Marital Expectation Test taken under eight different sets: self, ideal-self, ideal-spouse, partner; how partner perceives you, his ideal-spouse, himself, and his ideal-self Hypotheses predicted that six months later Ss making g…
