Measuring inequality in community resilience to natural disasters using large-scale mobility data
While conceptual definitions provide a foundation for the study of disasters and their impacts, the challenge for researchers and practitioners alike has been to develop objective and rigorous measures of resilience that are generalizable and scalable, taking into account spatiotemporal dynamics in the response and recovery of localized communities. In this paper, we analyze mobility patterns of more than 800,000 anonymized mobile devices in Hous…
Bias in smart city governance
Up-and-Coming or Down-and-Out? Social Media Popularity as an Indicator of Neighborhood Change
By quantifying Twitter activity and sentiment for each of 274 neighborhood areas in New York City, this study introduces the Neighborhood Popularity Index and correlates changes in the index with real estate prices, a common measure of neighborhood change. Results show that social media provide both a near-real-time indicator of shifting attitudes toward neighborhoods and an early warning measure of future changes in neighborhood composition and …

The impact of urban street tree species on air quality and respiratory illness
The Resilience to Emergencies and Disasters Index
Urban Informatics in the Science and Practice of Planning
The vast amount of data being generated in and about cities creates both an opportunity and a dilemma for urban policymakers and planners. This paper articulates the theoretical, practical, and pedagogical foundations for the fields of urban informatics and civic analytics and outlines the challenges to effectively applying big data and computational methods to urban management, policy, and planning. It describes the state of the field, defines t…
The Quantified Community and Neighborhood Labs
Instrumentation of the urban environment is not by itself sufficient to have a meaningful impact on the quality, sustainability, and resilience of cities – or more broadly on urban policy and planning. Understanding the social, economic, and cultural dynamics of urban life requires both an appreciation of the social sciences and a substantive engagement with communities across neighborhoods. The “Smart City” messaging is replete with claims of th…
Modeling the determinants of large-scale building water use
Do inclusionary zoning policies equitably disperse affordable housing? A comparative spatial analysis
Mixed-Income Housing and Neighborhood Integration
Using propensity score matching and regression techniques, together with an original database of approximately 12,000 inclusionary zoning (IZ) units built in Montgomery County, Maryland and Suffolk County, New York, this article comparatively analyzes the effect of IZ programs on racial and income integration and neighborhood change at the census tract level between 1980 and 2000. In particular, the article explores the question of whether IZ pro…
The Price of Victory
The Olympic Games have come to be viewed as an unprecedented opportunity to leverage a short-term event into a long-term positive legacy. Although the Olympics are assumed to yield economic benefits, there has been no rigorous analysis of the impact of hosting on residential real estate markets. Utilising a substantial dataset for six host cities and comparable cities between 1984 and 2000, this paper employs an adjusted interrupted time-series a…
