Love online: How relationship awareness on Facebook relates to relationship quality among college students
Recent literature has provided evidence that online behaviors may be a manifestation of off-line cognitions; furthermore online self-presentations may shape off-line outcomes. The present study examined the associations between the individual difference variable of authenticity (measured via relatio
Presenting Different Selves to Different People: Self-Presentation as a Function of Relationship Type and Contingent Self-Esteem
Past work has established a connection between self-esteem and self-presentation; however, research has not explored how self-esteem that is contingent on one's relationship may influence self-presentational tactics in that relationship. Across two studies, undergraduate students reported on the extent to which their self-esteem depended on their friendship and romantic relationship, as well as the extent to which they engaged in self-presentatio…
Seeing Everyone Else's Highlight Reels: How Facebook Usage is Linked to Depressive Symptoms
Two studies investigated how social comparison to peers through computer-mediated interactions on Facebook might impact users' psychological health. Study 1 (N = 180) revealed an association between time spent on Facebook and depressive symptoms for both genders. However, results demonstrated that making Facebook social comparisons mediated the link between time spent on Facebook and depressive symptoms for men only. Using a 14-day diary design (…
I know I have to earn your love: How the family environment shapes feelings of worthiness of love
Parental conditional regard is a parenting practice which may lead to negative outcomes for the child. Yet, no research has examined whether feelings of love worthiness may be dependent upon conditional parental regard. Furthermore, certain conditions within the family environment may exacerbate this effect. Across two studies, undergraduate students were asked to report on perceptions of parental conditional regard, aspects of the family life gr…

The importance of similarity and understanding of partners' marital ideals to relationship satisfaction
This article extends earlier work on the association between relationship partners' similarity and understanding about marital ideals and relationship satisfaction by controlling for individual differences in stereotype endorsement or typical responding. For heterosexual couples we separated a measure of understanding into the general understanding of partners and understanding that is unique to the specific relationship partner. The measures of …
Accuracy and bias in the perception of the partner in a close relationship
Partners in close relationships can be both accurate and biased in their perceptions of each other. Moreover, sometimes a bias can lead to accuracy. The authors describe a paradigm for the simultaneous measurement of accuracy and bias in 2-person relationships. One prevalent bias in close relationships is assumed similarity: Does the person think that his or her partner sees the world as he or she does? In a study of 238 dating and married hetero…
The Role of Identity in the Link between Relationship Thinking and Relationship Satisfaction
The link between a partner's thinking about the relationship and relationship satisfaction has been shown to be stronger for women than men. The main goal of this study was to examine the extent to which one's identity (rather than biological sex) moderates that link. In a survey of 238 couples (90 unmarried and 148 married), results indicated that, for unmarried couples, a general relational identity, or the tendency to see oneself in relation t…
Relational Identity and the Division of Household Labor
Data collected from an area probability sample of 90 unmarried and 148 married couples were used to determine whether the degree to which individuals viewed themselves in relational terms (relational identity) was associated with the types of household responsibilities they reported performing. For both males and females, relational identity was found to be a significant predictor of the performance of those tasks typically carried out by women. …
The Role of Attachment Style and Relationship Status of the Perceiver in the Perceptions of Romantic Partner
Intimate relationships can influence interpersonal perception because they are characterized by emotional involvement and close attachment between the members of the dyad; thus, attachment theory and research may shed light on interpersonal perception within intimate relationships. In this study, a probability sample of 179 men and 198 women who were married or involved in a committed dating relationship, was examined to test the hypothesis that …
Sampling Couples to Understand them: Mixing the Theoretical with the Practical
The project described here is one of the first to obtain a probability sample of couples based on characteristics of both partners. The undertaking is presented as a mix of theoretical and practical concerns. First, I present the theoretical background justifying the need for such a sample and outline the methods of the longitudinal study of couples. Then the steps taken to recruit the sample (238 couples) are traced, including the process of scr…
The Changing Influence of Interpersonal Perceptions on Marital Well-Being among Black and White Couples
This study is the longitudinal extension of an earlier study of perceptions of conflict in the first year of marriage (Acitelli et al., 1993). In both studies, we examined the relative importance (to marital well-being) of partners' similarity and understanding of conflict styles. While the earlier study related perceptions of conflict in the first year with first year marital well-being, the present study related the same first year perceptions …

Disciplines at Parallel Play
Comparing relationship researchers to children engaging in parallel play, the author questions the popular impression that the field of personal relationships is interdisciplinary. The term `interdisciplinary' is contrasted with `multidisciplinary'. Being interdisciplinary requires researchers to integrate different perspectives on the same problem from more than one discipline. Being multidisciplinary requires only that researchers representing …
Gender differences in the link between marital support and satisfaction in older couples
Recent work on social support in marriage indicates that the link between marital satisfaction and social support is stronger for wives than husbands (D. Julien & H. J. Markman, 1991). Hypotheses based on these findings and on studies of interpersonal perception were tested on a sample of 69 older married couples (mean age = 74 years). The separate effects of giving, receiving, and reciprocity on spouses' marital satisfaction and well-being were …
Perceptions of Conflict in the First Year of Marriage: How Important are Similarity and Understanding
Perceptions of self and spouse play a central role in marital relationships. Using data from 219 newlywed couples, we examined the relative importance (to marital well-being) of partners' similarity and understanding of conflict styles. These data include reports of behaviors of the self and spouse during their most recent disagreement. Behaviors were categorized as either constructive or destructive to resolving the conflict, and data from each …
Gender Differences in Relationship Awareness and Marital Satisfaction among Young Married Couples
Relationship awareness is defined here as thinking about interaction patterns, comparisons, or contrasts between oneself and one's partner in a relationship. This concept provides a frame-work for examining the effects of spouses' thinking and talking about their own relationships on marital satisfaction and contentment with life. During interviews conducted with 42 married couples, wives talked more about their relationships than their husbands …
When Spouses Talk to Each Other about their Relationship
A study of 42 married couples addressed the questions: (1) What effect does talking about their relationship have on perceptions of spouses' feelings of contentment; (2) Does talking about the relationship affect spouses differently in different situations? Subjects read stories about pleasant and unpleasant interactions between married couples who either talked or did not talk about their relationship. Subjects rated characters' feelings of cont…
