The Environmental Determinants of Skin Health
Climate change has a widespread impact on health across the continuum, influencing skin disease patterns, access to dermatologic care, and the burden of climate-sensitive conditions. Environmental changes driven by climate change impact the skin's ability to maintain homeostasis, contributing to the onset and exacerbation of various dermatologic diseases. Psoriasis, acne vulgaris, atopic dermatitis, photoaging, melasma, and skin cancers have been…
Expanding educational opportunities or widening learning inequalities? Evidence from national reform of pre-primary education in Ethiopia
Since a nationwide reform of pre-primary education in 2010, Ethiopia has experienced a massive expansion of pre-primary enrolment that increased tenfold in six years. Our paper aims to assess the distribution of early literacy outcomes between children who attended preschool and those who did not and explore how that distribution has changed throughout the reform and by factors such as gender, location, and parental literacy. We find an overall i…
Equitable North-South partnerships for ethical and policy relevant research in times of uncertainty
This paper considers the contribution of North-South partnerships in conducting ethical and policy-relevant research in times of uncertainty. Using collaborative autoethnography, we critically reflect on our experience conducting two related research projects in Ethiopia during the COVID-19 pandemic. We discuss how our research has adapted to take account of changing policy priorities in response to the crisis, how we implemented careful research…
Misalignment of policy priorities and financing for early childhood education
Preschool participation and students’ learning outcomes in primary school
This study examines whether a large expansion of pre-primary education in Ethiopia affected subsequent students’ learning outcomes during the national reform of pre-primary education. The study utilizes two comparable, representative early grade reading assessment data that straddle the reform period from 2010 to 2016, during which enrolment rates in pre-primary education soared by nearly ten times nationwide. We find that associations between pr…
Persistent inequalities in early years’ access and learning
In Ethiopia, major policy reforms to increase equitable access to pre-primary education were instigated in 2010, leading to a surge in pre-primary school enrolment. This paper investigates the effects of the expansion on who gets access to pre-primary education and on readiness for primary school. We find that inequalities in pre-primary access between advantaged and disadvantaged regions of the country persist following the reforms, with girls l…
