  • Co-creating climate knowledge: Informal networks, local innovation, and ecosystem restoration in coastal Tanzania

Open Access•Glynnis Vergotine, Almas Fortunatus Mazigo et al.•ARTICLE•Local Environment•2025

This study investigates the role of informal knowledge networks in climate adaptation and ecosystem restoration in coastal Tanzania. Focusing on coral reef and mangrove restoration efforts in Somanga village, the research applies the Shaxson et al. knowledge co-creation framework to analyse how local actors serve as intermediaries, translators, brokers, and innovators. Data collected through photovoice and interviews reveal that knowledge is not …

  • Oil, transport, water and food: A political-economy-ecology lens on VET in a climate changing world

Open Access•Heila Lotz-Sisitka, Simon Mcgrath et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Vocational Education…•2024

In this paper, drawing on an extensive research project across three countries (VET Africa 4.0 Collective 2023), we produce an emerging argument that it is necessary to rethink and reframe VET logics and approaches in a warming future dominated by informality and mass unemployment.Currently, neither the formal VET college or workplace are adequately set up to provide the type(s) of VET that are in demand or needed for just transitioning and sustai…

  • A landscape view of emerging sustainability responses within VET

Open Access•Presha Ramsarup, Simon Mcgrath et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Vocational Education…•2024

With evidence of global climate change and ongoing ecological degradation, there is an urgent need to give more attention to sustainability within VET to ensure that VET does not remain complicit in reproducing the unjust and unsustainable trajectories of current economic and development pathways. At present, the VET literature does not adequately address these issues, hence the need for this special issue. In response, this paper offers a meta-r…

  • Towards vocational education and training and skills development for sustainable futures

Simon Mcgrath, Presha Ramsarup•ARTICLE•Journal of Vocational Education…•2024

The scale and urgency of the climate emergency means that major transformations across a range of human systems are both necessary and inevitable; although what is inevitable and what is necessary

  • Reframing skills ecosystems for sustainable and just futures

    Open Access•Presha Ramsarup, Simon Mcgrath et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2023•Cited by: 4•References: 5

The current dominant approach to vocational education and training (VET) does not work in theory, policy or practice in current contexts of unsustainability and global inequality. Nor is it fit for future purpose. Drawing on a large-scale research collaboration between four universities, funded by the UK’s Global Challenges Research Fund, with co-funding and funding in-kind from global south partners, this paper is a contribution to imagining new…

  • A laminated, emergentist view of skills ecosystems

Presha Ramsarup, Heila Lotz-Sisitka et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Critical Realism•2022

In this paper we present a model of vocational education and training (VET) that can be used to guide decisions relating to VET in Africa today. This model takes the critique of the neoclassical, neoliberal model of VET as its starting point. Guided by Bhaskar's Critical Naturalism, we use immanent critique to consider the adequacy of proposed alternatives to the neoclassical approach, such as: the heterodox approach, which foregrounds explanatio…

  • Environment and sustainability education research as policy engagement: (Re-) invigorating ‘politics as potentia’ in South Africa

    Heila Lotz-Sisitka, Eureta Rosenberg et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Education Research•2020•References: 19

Using a meta-review approach organized historically in relation to critical policy incidents, this paper critically reviews the process of developing and (re) invigorating Environment and Sustainability Education (ESE) (policy) research as ESE policy engagement over a 30+ year period in a rapidly transforming society, South Africa. It offers an example of long term policy-research meta-review in a context of policy flux. It adds to a body of inte…
