Enhancing financial inclusion measurements: A comparative analysis using unsupervised machine learning methods across Mexican municipalities
Convergence in Colombia’s Total Factor Productivity: A spatial analysis 1992–2022
This study identifies key determinants of manufacturing value added and estimates Total Factor Productivity (TFP) across Colombia’s departments. It also examines manufacturing productivity convergence, testing the absolute β-convergence hypothesis and estimating the half-life and speed of convergence to assess how quickly productivity disparities diminish. Using data from 1992 to 2022, the study applies the Levinsohn-Petrin (LP) method and the Ge…
Crime, economic forces and trucks crossings in the US–Mexico border region
We investigate northbound loaded truck crossings from Mexico to the United States between 2015 and 2023. A weaker peso, exports and US industrial production positively affect loaded containers. Truck robberies at the municipal level show no statistically significant relationship with truck loadings, whereas truck robberies at the national and state levels present a negative, persistent association. Results suggest that Mexico–US trade would benef…
Subnational public debt sustainability in Mexico: Is the new fiscal rule working
In 1997, after a costly bailout, the central government of Mexico passed legislation intending to improve subnational finances through fiscal decentralization. As a result, many states rapidly began to accumulate debt during the following decade. Subnational public debt grew threefold between 1996 and 2006. The global financial crisis only aggravated the debt accumulation problem, which increased by 320% between 2006 and 2016. In response, a new …
Border crossings from Mexico to the U.S. and the role of border homicides
The sustainability of subnational public debt: Evidence from Mexican states
This paper evaluates public debt sustainability in all 32 subnational Mexican states from 1993 to 2016. Using dynamic panel data methods, we find several interesting results. First, although subnational public debt in Mexican states, in general, is still sustainable, in some states, fiscal stances have been compromised in recent years. Second, using different political indicators, we notice that these factors do not affect public debt accumulatio…
School competition and efficiency in elementary schools in Mexico
Capital and Labour Mobility and their Impacts on Mexico's Regional Labour Markets
This paper studies the effects of capital and labor mobility on real wages across Mexican states for the period 1997–2006. Employing dynamic panel data methods, we find: (1) strong positive effects on real wages from foreign direct investment (FDI) and from migration; (2) domestic and foreign migration provide similar wage effects; and (3) alternative partitions indicate that real wages are more sensitive to FDI-related fluctuations across states…
