  • The role of different types of stress on relationship satisfaction

Jalisa Lynn Karim, Uzma S Rehman et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Trauma Theory…•2025

These findings show that associations between stress and relationship functioning are complex and vary depending on how stress is conceptualized and measured. Our findings highlight the potential for greater theoretical integration between dyadic models of stress, specifically the Vulnerability Stress Adaption model and the transactional model of stress. • The Interrelationships Between Sexual Problems and Sexual Satisfaction

Julia Mcneil, Christine Logel et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Sex Research•2025•Referencias: 9

Sexual problems in relationships are negatively correlated with sexual satisfaction, but the direction of this relationship remains unclear. Although most theorizing posits that changes in sexual problems precede changes in sexual satisfaction, most studies are cross-sectional, so they cannot assess directionality or capture any bidirectional effects. This study addressed this limitation by investigating the association between sexual problems an…

  • Understanding motivations for sexual communication from a regulatory focus perspective

    Open Access•Kendra S Wasson, Uzma S Rehman•ARTICLE•Journal of Social and Personal…•2025•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 39

Despite the overwhelming support for the importance of sexual communication to intimate relationships, there is limited information about what motivates someone to engage in or avoid sexual communication. Motivational frameworks have been applied to various aspects of intimate relationships, serving as strong predictors of different behavioural processes and playing a crucial role in facilitating behavioural change. As such, we aimed to elucidate…

  • Let’s not talk about it”

    Uzma S Rehman, David A Herman et al.•ARTICLE•Psychology and Sexuality•2024•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 21

We investigated the extent to which individuals deliberately avoid the topic of pornography use with their partner and how such avoidance influences the association between pornography use and sexual satisfaction. We reasoned that such communicative avoidance may account for some of the negative relational effects associated with pornography use. A sample of 191 participants in mixed-sex relationships completed online measures of pornography use,…

Increasingly, affirmative consent - direct, unambiguous and voluntary agreement to engage in sexual activity ( Craig & McKinley, 2015 ) - is the standard being adopted by educational institutions in North America ( Bennett, 2016 ). Yet, studies show that most individuals continue to communicate consent through nonresistance ( Jozkowski et al., 2014a ). Given this discrepancy, it is critical to understand what factors prevent individuals from enga…

  • A Mixed-Method Analysis of Women’s Attributions about Their Partner’s Pornography Use

Uzma S Rehman, Vanessa Tran et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Sex Research•2020•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 7

We used a mixed-method design to examine the attributions women in mixed-gender/sex relationships make for their partner's perceived pornography use and whether such attributions covary with women's relationship and sexual satisfaction. A final sample of 199 women completed measures of relationship satisfaction, sexual satisfaction, and their perceptions of partner's pornography use. Participants also completed three open-ended questions assessin…

  • Understanding barriers to sexual communication

Open Access•Uzma S Rehman, Danielle Balan et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Social and Personal…•2019•Citada por: 21•Referencias: 27

There is consistent empirical evidence to suggest that more open and positive sexual communication is a vital component of sexual relationships, but romantic partners tend to avoid sexual communication. Although clinical and theoretical writing has identified barriers to sexual communication, there is a relative paucity of empirical literature investigating specific barriers to sexual communication and whether these barriers are unique to sexual …

  • The Influence of Attachment Styles on Sexual Communication Behavior

Julia Mcneil, Uzma S Rehman et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Sex Research•2017•Citada por: 4•Referencias: 10

Attachment theory is one of the major theoretical frameworks for understanding romantic relationships. Attachment styles are formed through interactions with caregivers and shape an individual's expectations of subsequent interpersonal relationships. In this study, we examined how attachment styles influence participants' ability to communicate with their partners about problems in their sexual relationship. A community sample of 81 couples engag…

  • The longitudinal association of relationship satisfaction and sexual satisfaction in long-term relationships.

Erin E Fallis, Uzma S Rehman et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Family Psychology•2016

Several prominent models of relationship satisfaction and sexual satisfaction imply directional relationships between these constructs (e.g., attachment theory, social exchange models of relationship satisfaction, the interpersonal exchange model of sexual satisfaction). Previous research has demonstrated that sexual satisfaction and relationship satisfaction are distinct but correlated constructs, but relatively few studies have examined how the…

    Open Access•Gelareh Karimiha, Uzma S Rehman et al.•ARTICLE•Personal Relationships•2015•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 9

The two studies in this article examined how perceptions of partner inconsolability are associated with the self‐esteem and relationship satisfaction of the caregiver. Study 1 documented a negative correlation between perceptions of partner inconsolability and relationship satisfaction, particularly among those high in rejection sensitivity. This association held even when controlling for both self‐ and partner‐reported levels of caregiving, as w…

  • Social support at a Sufi lodge in Punjab, Pakistan

    Uzma S Rehman, Uzma Rehman et al.•ARTICLE•Contemporary South Asia•2014•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 8

In this article, we analyze the various types of social support – informational, instrumenmental, and emotional/psychological help – that are provided at a Sufi lodge in southern Punjab, Pakistan. We argue that the lodge has become an important factor in securing the well-being of individuals and families in a context where the state has largely failed in terms of providing social services for its citizens. We conclude that future research in thi…

    Open Access•Uzma S Rehman, Amy Holtzworth‐munroe et al.•ARTICLE•Personal Relationships•2009•Referencias: 1

It was hypothesized that couples experiencing husband violence are more likely than nonviolent couples to have “anarchic” power outcomes, that is, the failure to reach agreement or make a decision when discussing relationship problems. Three groups of U.S. couples in committed relationships participated in the current study: 41 experiencing husband violence, 23 nonviolent but maritally distressed, and 39 nonviolent‐nondistressed. The power outcom…

The purpose of the present study was to compare the emotional reactions of depressed and nondepressed individuals to experiences of romantic rejection versus acceptance. We tested our hypotheses in a sample of 28 depressed and 43 nondepressed undergraduate students. In support of self‐consistency theories, the results showed that depressed individuals reported significantly greater negative mood in the romantic acceptance versus rejection conditi…
