The Relevancy of North American Planning Education for Overseas Practice
In the long-standing discussion of how to best prepare urban planning students to practice effectively in other countries, scholars generally fall into two camps: those that take a general principles approach and those that argue that planning is best taught within a specific context Many argue that North American planning education is irrelevant for practice in other countries, but little empirical evidence has been put forward to test their ass…
Updating Input-Output Tables Using Employment Data
In this paper a method is developed for updating input - output tables using employment figures. The technique is an improvement over previous conventional adjustments because of the general availability and quality of employment data. Operating on the Leontief inverse matrix, this reformulation builds upon prior attempts to integrate employment data into the adjustment process. However, this model avoids the need to develop employment multiplier…
Estimation of Input-Output Coefficients by Means of Employment Data
A new procedure is presented for estimating input-output tables with limited survey data. Its significance lies in two areas: it demonstrates the efficacy of adjusting biproportionally the Leontief inverse rather than the matrix of technical coefficients and it shows the potential of utilizing independently gathered, less expensive, employment data in the column constraint. This procedure is tested by use of Washington input-output tables; the re…
A Performance Test of the Biproportional Adjustment of Input-Output Coefficients
By use of input-output tables for three different years, the accuracy of the biproportional adjustment of input-output coefficients through time is investigated by comparing estimated and observed matrices. Major and minor input-output coefficients are distinguished. The contribution to the overall deviation by each coefficient category is found to be different. Relative errors are smaller for the major coefficients. The results suggest that the …
