The sancocho recovery following Hurricane Maria
Can Florida’s Coast Survive Its Reliance on Development
Problem, research strategy, and findings With its densely built coastline and economic and fiscal reliance on development, Florida is an extreme case of how climate change threatens both the built environment and urban land governance. We conducted one of the first statewide assessments of how sea level rise will affect Florida’s municipal revenues. We paired this with a statewide survey of coastal planners and managers to assess how they have be…
Developing Engagement Principles for Climate and Health Research
The team's advisory board and its funder expressed enthusiasm about the development of these principles and about the prospect of Western researchers conducting a project in a way that values Indigenous and traditional communities as partners and knowledge-holders and has the potential to bring benefits to the communities involved, including increased capacity for activities promoting health, equity, and well-being
Locating Neighborhood Displacement Risks to Climate Gentrification Pressures in Three Coastal Counties in Florida
Residential displacement as a result of climate change impacts will manifest on varied temporal and spatial scales affecting both coastal and inland communities. As coastal residents contend with more frequent shocks and stress from sea-level rise, many will eventually need to abandon their homes and property. Inland communities consisting of socioeconomically vulnerable populations with less exposure to climate change impacts will presumably be …
The British Army, Upper Silesia, and European Diplomacy, 1920–22
At the end of the First World War, Britain was at the limit of its capabilities, both militarily and diplomatically. Despite large reductions in the size of its armed forces, it had an increasing number of responsibilities as a victorious power. One of these responsibilities was to ensure the success of a plebiscite in Upper Silesia. It had little desire to do this but was compelled to provide support in order to counter French influence in the r…
Implementing a mandate to plan for sea level rise
The 2015 Peril of Flood Act mandates that municipalities in Florida, USA consider sea level rise (SLR) in the coastal element of the comprehensive plan. Because the mandate lacks specificity, planning actors have broad discretion on how to respond. This paper examines how state, regional, and local level actors are implementing the mandate through a case study of the Tampa Bay region. Documents and interviews reveal that state agency staff provid…
Mandated Planning for Climate Change
Problem, research strategy, and findings Florida’s 2015 Peril of Flood Act requires that coastal localities incorporate sea level rise (SLR) planning policies into their comprehensive plans. We surveyed planners and reviewed more than 150 plans to determine how communities responded to the state mandate along three domains: planning intelligence, SLR responses, and collaboration. We learned that the mandate spurred SLR planning, but that local SL…
Greater Eurasia
The correlation of national, supranational, trans-regional, and internationallegal systems is a concern of comparative legal (including their political science andinternational relations aspects) studies because it has decisive influence on how Statesposition themselves within the family of nations, perceive themselves in the surroundingworld community, and build relations with other nations, international organizations, and the international comm…

The British Soldier is no Bolshevik”
This article considers the breakdown in discipline in the British Army which occurred in Britain and on the Western Front during the process of demobilization at the end of the First World War. Many soldiers, retained in the army immediately after the Armistice, went on strike, and some formed elected committees, demanding their swifter return to civilian life. Their perception was that the existing demobilization system was unjust, and men were …

Low-Regrets Incrementalism
Sea level rise is one of the climate change effects most amenable to adaptation planning as the impacts are familiar and the nature of the phenomenon is unambiguous. Yet, significant uncertainties remain. Using a normative framework of adaptive management and natural hazards planning, we examine how coastal communities in Florida are planning in the face of accelerating sea level rise through analysis of planning documents and interviews with pla…
Voluntary Collaboration for Adaptive Governance
The Southeast Florida Regional Climate Change Compact (SFRCCC) has been highlighted as a regional climate change governance exemplar for land use planning. After six years, we find the compact has given momentum to local climate change planning through the Regional Climate Action Plan and provides a foundation for adaptive governance for climate change adaptation. We also find aspects of the compact lacking in terms of representation, decision ma…
Narrating Resilience
How can communities enhance social-ecological resilience within complex urban systems? Drawing on a new urbanist proposal in Orange County, California, it is suggested that planning that ignores diverse ways of knowing undermines the experience and shared meaning of those living in a city. The paper then describes how narratives lay at the core of efforts to reintegrate the Los Angeles River into the life of the city and the US Fire Learning Netw…

The U.S. Fire Learning Network
Through the U.S. Fire Learning Network (FLN), The Nature Conservancy and federal land management agencies are attempting to reorient fire management from fire suppression toward ecological restoration and community protection. In its first 2 years, the FLN linked place-based collaboratives at a national scale. Using structured planning exercises, the FLN mediated between central coordination and collaborative autonomy by guiding partners through …

Apperception revisited
Personality and Immunity
The present smdy focuses on the sntistical association between depression and immune deficiency. In explaining this association, Schwartz (1983) maintains that depression stems from repression and that repression disrupts the neuroimmune system. In contrast, Becker (1973) argues that the depressive person does not repress feelings of meaninglessness, and Simonton, Matthews-Simonton, and Creighton (1978) argue that the desire not to live a meaning…
