  • Planetary Urban Involution in the Tokyo Suburbs

    Open Access•Lieba Faier•ARTICLE•International Journal of Urban…•2021•References: 38

This article explores how the encounter between different and unequally positioned trajectories of urbanization has resulted in extreme forms of migrant labor exploitation, recently identified as 'human trafficking'. Specifically, it examines how a landscape of such exploitation developed in Japan between the late 1970s and early 2000s as Filipina migrants came to work in a growing sex industry for foreign women. In this article I bring a feminis…

  • Euphoric Anomaly

    Open Access•Lieba Faier•ARTICLE•Social Analysis•2018

Elusiveness can itself be elusive. This article considers why matsutake draw over-the-top excitement as an elusive commodity even in years of prolific harvests. In 2010 Japan, an unexpectedly copious domestic matsutake harvest prompted a precipitous drop in the mushroom’s price and made the mushroom readily accessible. The article traces the sources of consumer excitement that year, showing how matsutake commodity elusiveness is itself produced t…

  • Ethnographies of Encounter

Lieba Faier, Lisa Rofel•ARTICLE•Annual Review of Anthropology•2014•Cited by: 70•References: 74

Ethnographies of encounter are one response to calls to decolonize anthropology. These ethnographies explore how culture making occurs through unequal relationships involving two or more groups of people and things that appear to exist in culturally distinct worlds. The term encounter refers to everyday engagements across difference. Ethnographies of encounter focus on the cross-cultural and relational dynamics of these processes. They consider h…

  • Everyday articulations of prostitution: How some Filipina migrants in rural Japan describe sexual–economic relationships

    Lieba Faier•ARTICLE•Gender Place & Culture•2013•Cited by: 5•References: 16

This article draws attention to ‘everyday articulations of prostitution’: the diverse, performative ways that people reproduce and rework meanings of ‘prostitution’ as they mobilize the term in their day-to-day lives. The article offers an ethnographic illustration of this process by exploring why and to what ends a group of Filipina wives of rural Japanese men referred to the behavior of another Filipina woman in their community as ‘prostitution…

  • Affective investments in the Manila region: Filipina migrants in rural Japan and transnational urban development in the Philippines

    Open Access•Lieba Faier•ARTICLE•Transactions of the Institute of…•2012•Cited by: 16•References: 63

Over the past few decades, remittances from overseas migrant labourers have come to play an important role in fuelling demand for new residential developments in countries like the Philippines. This paper draws attention to how financial flows enabling this urban development are tied to transnational migrants’ experiences abroad. Drawing on more than 2 years of ethnographic fieldwork in Japan and the Philippines, it considers how, why and to what…

  • Theorizing the Intimacies of Migration: Commentary on The Emotional Formations of Transnational Worlds

    Open Access•Lieba Faier•ARTICLE•International Migration•2011•References: 8

  • Fungi, Trees, People, Nematodes, Beetles, and Weather: Ecologies of Vulnerability and Ecologies of Negotiation in Matsutake Commodity Exchange

    Open Access•Lieba Faier•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning A…•2011•Cited by: 15•References: 43

The author draws attention to the ways in which commodity chains take shape in the intersections between different natural-cultural ecologies. It is suggested that a focus on the diverse ways that people involved in commodity chains relate to these ecologies reveals not only the links but also the disarticulations through which commodity relations take shape. To develop this perspective, the author focuses on the trade in 'matsutake,' a variety o…

  • Marketing Dreams, Manufacturing Heroes: The Transnational Labor Brokering of Filipino Workers by Anna Romina Guevarra

    Open Access•Lieba Faier•ARTICLE•American Anthropologist•2011

  • Intimate Encounters: Filipina Women and the Remaking of Rural Japan

    Lieba Faier•BOOK•Intimate Encounters•2009

This groundbreaking study explores the recent dramatic changes brought about in Japan by the influx of a non-Japanese population, Filipina brides. Lieba Faier investigates how Filipina women who emigrated to rural Japan to work in hostess bars-where initially they were widely disparaged as prostitutes and foreigners-came to be identified by the local residents as "ideal, traditional Japanese brides." Intimate Encounters , an ethnography of cultur…

  • A new form of collaboration in cultural anthropology: Matsutake worlds

    Open Access•Timothy K Choy, Timothy Choy et al.•ARTICLE•American Ethnologist•2009•Cited by: 84•References: 52

Experiments in collaboration open new investigative possibilities for cultural anthropologists. In this report, we use our research on matsutake mushrooms to show the promise of collaborative experiments for ethnographers of scale making, global connection, and human-nonhuman relations. Anna Tsing introduces. Mogu Mogu (Timothy Choy and Shiho Satsuka) argue that the mushroomic figure of mycorrhizal life illuminates workings of capital and power, …

  • Runaway Stories: The Underground Micromovements of FilipinaOyomesanin Rural Japan

    Open Access•Lieba Faier•ARTICLE•Cultural Anthropology•2008•Cited by: 25•References: 53

During fieldwork among Filipina migrants married to Japanese men in rural Nagano, stories about Filipina women who had "run away" from Japanese husbands and families in the region regularly surfaced in casual conversations. This essay focuses on both running away and stories about it as interconnected means through which these women negotiated their dissatisfactions with their lives abroad. I suggest that through such practices, these women's dis…

  • Filipina migrants in rural Japan and their professions of love

    Open Access•Lieba Faier•ARTICLE•American Ethnologist•2007•Cited by: 69•References: 42

During fieldwork in rural Nagano, I regularly heard Filipina migrants assert that they loved their Japanese husbands. Most of these men had been customers the women met while working as "entertainers" at local Filipina hostess bars. Here I explore how, why, and to what ends these women emphasized their love for their husbands as they crafted lives and selves in both Japan and the Philippines. Taking a transnational perspective to feminist work on…
