An Anthology of Urban Habits
How do bodies and cities shape each other through habit? An Anthology of Urban Habits -- a special issue of Streetnotes edited by Jorge de La Barre, Blagovesta Momchedjikova, and Jo Novelli-Blasko -- attempts to investigate that by showcasing 133 repeated activities and behaviors occurring in cities around the world: Antofagasta, Athens, Lisbon, London, New York City, Phoenix, Rio de Janeiro, Sofia, Tbilisi, and Tokyo. Organized alphabetically an…
The Sound Seasons
These pieces explore the seasons of sound in a city caught in the global pandemic
Introduction
Introduction to the Streetnotes 28: Sounds and Silence in the Pandemic City
Poetic Verticalities
These poems attempt to capture our experiences of verticality in the city, as a daily practice. “Ice-skating” attempts to capture what it means to glide on the ice rink in the city and connect to things beyond the immediate present; “Nightstands by the Curb” records seeing two discarded nightstands by the side of the road and how in their loneliness they stand tall and significant despite the fact that their owner found them useless. In “Hair A-Z…

Introduction to Streetnotes 26: From Above: The Practice of Verticality
Standing, Walking, Dancing Tall
This is a poetic examination of how verticality becomes a threat in the context of race in the city
An Alphabet of Disaster
This is a postcard performance project about the Twin Towers, language, and memory
Dakar 10
The idea of representing a city in 10 word descriptions comes from a writing workshop that I led in the Senegalese capital of Dakar in 2015, on the invitation of the Dakar Women’s Group. The pairing of the ideal 10 word descriptions with the ideal 10 images developed as a result of multiple revisions for various occasions, over the course of a year. I hope that the selection here gives a glimpse into but also a feel of a place rich with color, vi…
Argul Weave
When Argul Weave officially opened in Bursa, Turkey, in the Fall of 2014, it became the first structure of its kind in the region: master- minded by architect Burak Pekoglu, it combines complex geometry with local labor and building materials—Patara beige natural stone for the façade, from Burdur, and dark-red Aegean marble for the plinth, from the Aegean area—to make a bold aesthetic statement in Yildirim, Bursa—the textile industry hub of Turke…
Introduction
Taking on the City
These three poems express the challenges of an urban mom to see the city despite, and through, her kids' perspective
London Tube Scene
Poem
My heart’s in the small lands
To make his own input in the consolidation of New York City visible at the New York World’s Fair of 1964-65, the controversial city-builder Robert Moses commissioned a scale model exhibit offering an up-to-date comprehensive aerial view of the metropolis - the Panorama of the City of New York. Located in the Queens Museum of Art, the Panorama is, to this day, periodically updated in order to accommodate all changes and new buildings of the city. …
