  • A day at Lia García’s elementary school

Annie Sansonetti•ARTICLE•Research in Drama Education The…•2024

This article recounts a day at Mexican writer, activist, educator, and performance artist Lia García's “elementary school”: a “school” that takes the form of invited performances in other teachers' classrooms. It studies García's staging of an applied theatre workshop at an elementary school in November 2020 with her children's story Pan de Mia as its script. In an analysis of García's practice as a transfeminist artist and educator, I argue that…

  • Girl Talk and Hold Music

    Annie Sansonetti•ARTICLE•TSQ Transgender Studies Quarterly•2023•References: 2

In this article, the author visits filmmaker Wu Tsang's 2015 short film Girl Talk at the New Museum in New York. The film's documentation of a dance, the author's fieldwork in the museum, and Tsang's cinematography evidence how feminine boyhood and trans girlhood are better supported in the music, conversation, and dance of what the author calls “girlfriend performance.” Against the violence of adult-authored accounts of trans feminine childhood,…

  • Black Trans Girlhood, Healing, and Transformative Justice in Akwaeke Emezi's PET

    Annie Sansonetti•ARTICLE•QED A Journal in GLBTQ Worldmaking•2022

In the fantasy/speculative fiction young adult novel PET (2019), Akwaeke Emezi's fifteen-year-old Black trans girl protagonist, Jam, disrupts the traditional socio-cultural and medico-legal hindrances to Black trans girlhood's “liveness” by actively devising and participating in carefully staged scenes of intracommunal healing and transformative justice. With Jam's knowledge, history, and experience among Black people and community as a guiding l…

  • Transfeminism for Children

    Annie Sansonetti•ARTICLE•Jeunesse Young People Texts…•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 1

This hybrid research article/three-act play introduces what the author calls “transfeminism for children”—both its practices and its makers—as material for art-based research, criticism, and pedagogy in queer- and trans-affirming childhood studies. It stages three contemporary acts of transfeminism for children to consider how girl friendships refuse cis-normative knowing in favour of making girlhood possible for feminine boys and trans girls: Ac…
