“You are the best… but can you twerk?” How twitter users challenge the messaging around female professional footballers in the 2019 Uefa women’s champions league final in a postfeminist context
This paper analyses how fans engage on Twitter with the 22 players in the starting line up during the week of the 2019 UEFA Women’s Champions League final. It explores fans’ entangled representations of female professional footballers on Twitter from a postfeminist sensibility. Out of 200 tweets posted by the players during the day of the final and the week after, the research focuses on the 1468 fans replies to the 20 most engaged players’ tweet…
Dancing With Derrida
Feminists have long wrestled with the binary of gender difference in sport, employing diverse theoretical and empirical approaches to understand how difference is constructed, maintained and challenged. In this article, we engage with Jacques Derrida’s work on deconstruction and différance . Specifically, we engage with deconstruction’s double gesture in order to firstly identify, and later resist and disorganize the hierarchical oppositions of g…
Assessing the sociology of sport
On the 50th anniversary of the ISSA and IRSS, one of the leading Spanish scholars on gender and sport, Montserrat Martín, considers research on how entrenched gender identities empower males and marginalize females. In assessing the trajectory of research, it is noted that work in the sociology of sport has challenged and facilitated change in understanding gender identities with emphasis on both the 'multiplicities of difference' and on 'shared …
The Pink-wheeled Bike—Takes Two, Three, and Four
This is a collaborative postdoctoral story. We were visiting scholars at the International Institute of Qualitative Inquiry at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Our stories are about the bike with the pink tires that we shared to ride around campus. We thought while we rode and reflected upon our different realities in our countries, our research work, and our dreams. We constituted a safe and inspiratory network, and this has had a…
The (im)possible sexual difference
To date Luce Irigaray's sexual difference theory has had very little impact on sport feminism studies. While sexual difference is still considered in some feminist circles as a regression to the old idea of anatomy as destiny, Irigaray's sexual difference theory is more about criticizing the universal male subject and creating the possibility of female subjectivity. Irigaray's work is focused on language and normative categories. Using Irigaray's…
Don't Be Mistaken-This Does Concern You
In this article, the author attempts to represent the mise abyme effect, when writing a "story within a story." Instead of showing the two stories of sexual harassment in sport that the author wrote to trigger her students' reactions to this issue, this article focuses on the experience of one of the students reacting to the two stories and discovering her own personal relationship to sexual harassment in sport. Instead of choosing a linear descr…
