  • Factors influencing PrEP adoption in sexual health clinics within Ontario’s public health system: A qualitative study using the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research (CFIR)

Open Access•Emma Nagy, Boris Alvarado et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2026

Introduction: HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) utilization in Ontario is concentrated in two large urban centers, resulting in geographic and structural inequities in access. Little is known about adoption in Public Health Sexual Health Clinics (PHSHCs) or the implementation factors influencing uneven uptake. This study aimed to: (1) assess the extent of PrEP adoption in PHSHCs; (2) identify barriers and facilitators affecting implementation; …

  • Competency based medical education implementation at the institutional level: A cross-discipline comparative program evaluation

Heather Braund, Damon Dagnone et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Teacher•2025

INTRODUCTION: As an early adopter of competency-based medical education (CBME) our postgraduate institution was uniquely positioned to analyze implementation experience data across programs, while keeping institutional factors constant. We described participants' experiences related to CBME implementation across programs derived from early program evaluation efforts within our setting. • Assessing the educational impact of a new HIV PrEP training module among primary care providers in Southeast Ontario: Results from immediate and 3-months post-training evaluation surveys

    Open Access•Jorge Martinez-Cajas, Jorge Luis Martinez-Cajas et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•2025

Primary care providers (PCPs) in Canada frequently report limited knowledge and confidence in prescribing HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). To address this gap, we developed and evaluated an online educational module designed to enhance PCPs’ knowledge and PrEP-related clinical skills. Pre- and post-training surveys (n = 38 and n = 20, respectively) showed substantial improvements: understanding of PrEP eligibility increased by 46%; knowledge …

  • The Assessment Burden in Competency-Based Medical Education: How Programs Are Adapting

Open Access•Adam Szulewski, Heather Braund et al.•ARTICLE•Academic Medicine•2023

Residents and faculty have described a burden of assessment related to the implementation of competency-based medical education (CBME), which may undermine its benefits. Although this concerning signal has been identified, little has been done to identify adaptations to address this problem. Grounded in an analysis of an early Canadian pan-institutional CBME adopter’s experience, this article describes postgraduate programs’ adaptations related t…

  • GeroCast: Using podcasting to deliver living cases in gerontology education

Open Access•MOHAMMAD AUAIS, Julie Cameron et al.•ARTICLE•Health Education Journal•2023

Objective: To describe the creation of an educational podcast with ‘living cases’ of older adults to support students’ learning on a gerontology course and report on students’ evaluation of the project. Setting: Gerontology course in a graduate programme. Open Access•Heather Braund, Nancy Dalgarno et al.•ARTICLE•SSM - Qualitative Research in…•2023

COVID-19 has caused an urgent implementation of virtual care (VC). Most research has focused on patient and physician experience with virtual care. Non-physician healthcare providers have played an active role in transitioning to virtual care, yet little is known about their experiences. This study explored their lived experiences in caring for patients virtually. Forty non-physician healthcare providers from local hospitals, community, and home …

  • Primary care providers’ lived experiences of genetics in practice

Open Access•Brittany Harding, Colleen Webber et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Community Genetics•2018

To effectively translate genetic advances into practice, engagement of primary care providers (PCPs) is essential. Using a qualitative, phenomenological methodology, we analyzed key informant interviews and focus groups designed to explore perspectives of urban and rural PCPs. PCPs endorsed a responsibility to integrate genetics into their practices and expected advances in genetic medicine to expand. However, PCPs reported limited knowledge and …

  • Using graphic illustrations to uncover how a community of practice can influence the delivery of compassionate healthcare

    Open Access•Trisha Parsons, Deborah Tregunno et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Humanities•2018•Cited by: 2•References: 2

Our modern-day frenetic healthcare culture has progressed to a state where healthcare professionals tend to detach themselves from the emotions of their patients/clients, rather than embed compassion into their daily practice. The AMS Phoenix Project: A Call to Caring was implemented with the goal to instil and sustain empathy and compassion in environments where clinicians learn and work. The purpose of this study is to report on how an interpro…
