  • Refugee Family Voices: Shelter Needs in Iraqi Kurdistan

    Open Access•Hariwan Zebari, Paul‐philippe Paré et al.•ARTICLE•International Migration•2020•References: 1

The shelter needs of refugees in Iraqi Kurdistan were documented by local government and humanitarian organizations. However, official narratives do not include the “voices” of those directly affected by inadequate shelter: the refugee families themselves. This study uses a mixed‐methods approach to understand the shelter issues experienced by 53 refugee families in Iraqi Kurdistan. Refugee families disclosed seven common shelter problems: water …

  • Correctional shorthands: Focal concerns and the decision to administer solitary confinement

  • An Examination of the Local Life Circumstances of Female Offenders: Mothering, Illegal Earnings and Drug Use

Carolyn Yule, Paul‐philippe Paré et al.•ARTICLE•The British Journal of Criminology•2015•Cited by: 3•References: 30

Most women convicted of crime are mothers, yet we know little about whether the daily activity of mothering affects women’s criminal behaviour. If mothering reduces opportunities to engage in crime, strengthens informal controls and increases the costs of crime, it should discourage offending. On the other hand, if children create an imperative for resources that women cannot accommodate legally or exacerbate psychological and emotional strains, …

  • Income inequality, poverty and crime across nations

    Open Access•Paul‐philippe Paré, R B Felson et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Sociology•2014•Cited by: 29•References: 60

We examine the relationship between income inequality, poverty, and different types of crime. Our results are consistent with recent research in showing that inequality is unrelated to homicide rates when poverty is controlled. In our multi-level analyses of theInternationalCrimeVictimizationSurvey we find that inequality is unrelated to assault, robbery, burglary, and theft when poverty is controlled. We argue that there are also theoretical rea…

  • Risks of Minor and Serious Violent Victimization in Prison: The Impact of Inmates’ Mental Disorders, Physical Disabilities, and Physical Size

Open Access•Paul‐philippe Paré, Paul-Philippe Paré et al.•ARTICLE•Society and Mental Health•2011

The authors use the Survey of Inmates in State and Federal Correctional Facilities 2004, which includes 18,185 respondents, to examine why some inmates are more likely to experience violent victimization in prison, focusing on the effects of mental disorders, physical disabilities, and physical size. The authors test four hypotheses based on patterns of minor versus serious victimization and two mediators for provocative behaviors: verbal abuse a…

  • Is there a trade‐off between fertility and longevity? A comparative study of women from three large historical databases accounting for mortality selection

Open Access•Alain Gagnon, Kendra R Smith et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•2009

Frontier populations provide exceptional opportunities to test the hypothesis of a trade‐off between fertility and longevity. In such populations, mechanisms favoring reproduction usually find fertile ground, and if these mechanisms reduce longevity, demographers should observe higher postreproductive mortality among highly fertile women. We test this hypothesis using complete female reproductive histories from three large demographic databases: …

  • The Reporting of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault by Nonstrangers to the Police

    Open Access•R B Felson, Paul‐philippe Paré•ARTICLE•Journal of Marriage and the Family•2005•Cited by: 49•References: 32

We examine the effects of the gender of the victim and offender and their relationship to each other on whether sexual and physical assaults are reported to the police. We also examine the reasons victims give for not reporting assaults and whether reporting patterns have changed over time. The analyses are based on a sample of 6,291 physical assaults and 1,787 sexual assaults from the National Violence Against Women Survey. The results suggest t…
