Mapping flows, shaping spaces: A review of data-driven approaches to EU cross-border regions
Knowing where, how and for what purposes people frequently cross borders has significant policy implications. However, limited data availability often hinders effective decision-making. The lack of granular, reliable and comparable data frequently leads to an underestimation of the true scale of cross-border movements within the EU. Additionally, the assessment of the socioeconomic potential of border regions does not consider the hypothetical el…
Big in the neighbourhood: Identifying local and regional centres through their network position
National city ranks do not describe a settlement's local and regional relevance adequately. We introduce a method to rank settlements' centrality based on travel time and settlement size. We investigate the relationship between a settlement's size, whether it is a local or regional centre, and its service endowment. The approach explains per capita service endowments in Europe well, adding nuances that national rankings do not fully capture. In a…
Are remote rural areas in Europe remarkable? Challenges and opportunities
Remote rural areas are facing strong demographic and socioeconomic challenges as being far from a city can limit social and economic interaction opportunities. This study analyses the EU remote rural areas based on a set of selected indicators related to demographic, economic, accessibility, connectivity, biodiversity, land use and geographical context. Spatial cluster techniques revealed that half of the remote rural areas are in a disadvantaged…
Mapping accessibility to generic services in Europe: A market-potential based approach
An important goal of land use and transport policies is improving accessibility to services. Access to services differs significantly between different territories, and regional development policies, including Cohesion Policy, are often used to improve accessibility where it is too low. Unfortunately, comprehensive data on facility locations is not available in Europe, making it difficult to evaluate, ex-ante, the direct or indirect effects of po…
Reducing the uncertainty induced by spatial aggregation in accessibility and spatial interaction applications
Analyses of spatial interaction are to some degree plagued by uncertainty regarding the impact of spatially dispersed interaction masses within zones on travel times. In this paper, interaction-weighted travel times are computed from a matrix between regularly distributed points at fine resolution, and used together with secondary data to improve estimates of interaction weighted travel time based on commonly applied methods. The paper proposes a…
Population growth, accessibility spillovers and persistent borders: Historical growth in West-European municipalities
Lack of cross-border transport supply has repeatedly been blamed for the fact that national borders limit spatial interaction and, consequently, the growth of border regions. This study applies an accessibility approach to investigate for most municipalities in ten countries in mainland West Europe if foreign transport supply is lagging behind, and if population growth in these municipalities has been affected by the limits that national borders …
Economic evaluation of agricultural land to assess land use changes
Evaluating the Impact of Land-Use Density and Mix on Spatiotemporal Urban Activity Patterns: An Exploratory Study Using Mobile Phone Data
Dense and mixed land-use configurations are assumed to encourage high and prolonged activity levels, which in turn are considered to be important for the condition of urban neighbourhoods. We used mobile phone usage data recorded in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, as a proxy for urban activity to test whether the density in different forms of urban land use increases the level of activity in urban areas, and whether mixed land uses can prolong high l…
