  • Mission impossible? Pursuing the co-existence of viable predator populations and sustainable reindeer husbandry in Finland

Open Access•Sirpa Rasmu, Ilpo Kojola et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Rural Studies•2020•Cited by: 2•References: 2

The recovery and expansion of large carnivores have increased livestock damage in Europe, one example being the reindeer husbandry in northern Fennoscandia. Mostly free-ranging reindeer herds have been exposed to increased predation. We studied connections between the contemporary predator management approach and the consequences of predation in reindeer husbandry within the reindeer management area in Finland. National and supranational manageme…

  • Recovery of large carnivores in Europe’s modern human-dominated landscapes

Open Access•Guillaume Chapron, Petra Kaczensky et al.•ARTICLE•Science•2014

The conservation of large carnivores is a formidable challenge for biodiversity conservation. Using a data set on the past and current status of brown bears ( Ursus arctos ), Eurasian lynx ( Lynx lynx ), gray wolves ( Canis lupus ), and wolverines ( Gulo gulo ) in European countries, we show that roughly one-third of mainland Europe hosts at least one large carnivore species, with stable or increasing abundance in most cases in 21st-century recor…

  • Reproduction and Mortality of Finnish Semi-Domesticated Reindeer in Relation to Density and Management Strategies

    Open Access•Timo Helle, Ilpo Kojola•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•1993

We assessed the effects of management strategies during 1960-73 relative to strategies used during 1974-87 on the reproduction and mortality of 56 semi-domesticated herds of Finnish reindeer (Rangifer tarandus tarandus). During 1960-73, reindeer fed exclusively on natural forage growing on their range, and reindeer were harvested mostly as adults. These strategies were modified starting in 1974 to include supplemental feeding in the southern part…
