Preventing Mother-to-Child HIV Transmission Among South African Adolescents
Although prevention of mother-to-child HIV transmission (PMTCT) programs are predicated on maternal behavior change, little is known about sociocultural factors affecting maternal—child care practices in this arena. The authors used narrative methods (key informant workshops, questionnaires, focus groups, and case study analysis) to explore how sociocultural context shapes adolescent mothers' ability to adhere to programmatic recommendations in r…
Factors Influencing Teen Mothers' Enrollment and Participation in Prevention of Mother-to-Child HIV Transmission Services in Limpopo Province, South Africa
In this article, we examine barriers to HIV testing uptake and participation in prevention of mother-to-child HIV transmission (PMTCT) services among adolescent mothers aged 15 to 19 years in rural and urban Limpopo Province, South Africa. We used the narrative research method involving key informants constructing typical case studies of adolescent experiences with HIV testing and entry into PMTCT. Case studies formed the basis of a community-bas…
HIV-disclosure in the context of vertical transmission
HIV-disclosure among childbearing women remains poorly understood, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. This paper chronicles disclosure experiences of 31 women attending prevention of mother-to-child HIV transmission services in Johannesburg. Data collection entailed repeat in-depth interviews over a nine-month period. Virtually all women (93.5%) had told at least one person (usually a partner), most voluntarily and within a week of the test resu…
Exploring socio-economic conditions and poor follow-up rates of HIV-exposed infants in Johannesburg, South Africa
In 2002, more than 280,000 HIV-exposed babies were born in South Africa. According to international PMTCT guidelines, these children require follow-up to 12 months of age. Worldwide, the high loss to follow-up rates experienced by PMTCT programs precludes them from identifying and managing HIV-infected children. Socio-economic factors have been identified as potential contributors to poor follow-up. A small descriptive study to examine socio-econ…
Identity experience among progressive gay Muslims in North America
This qualitative study aims to document the identity experience of progressive gay Muslim men in a North American context. Six in-depth interviews, supplemented with participant observation, were conducted of gay Muslim men who attended an international conference for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered, and questioning (LGBTQ) Muslims. For progressive gay Muslims such as these, a Muslim identity appears three-dimensional (religious, ethno-cult…
How Gender Roles Influence Sexual and Reproductive Health Among South African Adolescents
Although the literature on Africa increasingly adopts a gendered approach to sexual and reproductive health issues, few studies have addressed adolescent pregnancy and parenthood in such a framework. This article examines links between gender ideology or gender roles and the social impact of adolescent childbearing in the lives of rural and urban adolescents in KwaZulu/Natal, South Africa. It employs a triangulated research methodology (focus‐gro…
Pregnancy Termination among South African Adolescents
Although African adolescents' risk of undergoing abortion and of related health complications is well‐documented, little is known about the procedure's prominence in their lives and the pathways that lead to their reliance upon it. This study investigates abortion dynamics among male and female Zulu adolescents in KwaZulu/Natal, South Africa. It explores the role of abortion in young people's sexual and reproductive experience, its acceptability,…
Coping with HIV/Aids in Durban's commercial sex industry
This paper describes coping mechanisms used by commercial sex workers (CSWs) and their partners in confronting the threat of HIV. Data are part of a study exploring sexuality and HIV-related issues among members of the Durban commercial sex industry. Participants were 100 female CSWs, 25 male trucker driver clients and ten male personal partners. Data were collected using semi-structured questionnaires, focus group discussions and in-depth interv…

Sexual non-negotiation
Although African teenage girls know about Aids, it does not seem to be an immediate threat in the face of the physical abuse and helplessness that characterises their sexual experiences, write CHRISTINE VARGA and LINDIWE MAKUBALO
