  • Emotion Regulation in Mexican and U.S. White Adults: Cultural and Gender Differences

Open Access•Julia Gallegos, Norma Rodríguez et al.•ARTICLE•Revista Interamericana de…•2023

The present study aimed to clarify the relationship between (a) cultural differences (reflected in family values and family environments) and gender and (b) cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression among Mexican and White U.S. undergraduate college students. The Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (ERQ) to assess Cognitive Reappraisal and Expressive Suppression; the Family Environment Scale (FES) to assess Cohesion, Conflict, and Expressiven…

  • Cross-cultural differences in obsessive-compulsive symptom dimensions across young adults in Mexico and USA

Noah C Berman, Julia Gallegos et al.•ARTICLE•Mental Health Religion & Culture•2020

Despite cross-cultural differences in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) symptomology, little work has been extended in those in Mexico. To bridge this gap, the current study administered standardised and culturally-validated measures of OCD and a critical cultural construct – spirituality – to young adults in Mexico (n = 430) and the USA (n = 194). Linear regression analyses indicated that individuals in Mexico reported significantly greater sc…

  • Effect of Patient and Therapist Factors on Suicide Risk Assessment

    Noah C Berman, Abigail Stark et al.•ARTICLE•Death Studies•2015•Cited by: 1•References: 1

The present study examined how patient risk factors and clinician demographics predict the assessment of suicide risk. Clinicians (N = 333) read two vignettes, one of which manipulated patient risk factors, then rated the patient's likelihood of suicide and need for hospitalization. Clinicians' assessments were heterogeneous. Results indicated that certain patient risk factors (access to excess medication) and clinician demographics (relationship…

  • Clinical decision making regarding suicide risk: Effect of patient and clinician age

    Noah C Berman, Esther S Tung et al.•ARTICLE•Death Studies•2015•Cited by: 5•References: 1

To ascertain how patient age influences suicide risk assessment, clinicians (N = 262) read an ambiguous vignette about Bill (aged either 39 or 79 years old) and subsequently rated Bill's suicide risk and hospitalization needs. Suicide-risk ratings varied greatly and young clinicians rated Bill's suicide risk and hospitalization needs higher when he was elderly (79 years old); whereas, older clinicians rated Bill's suicide risk and need for hospit…

  • Effect of a legal prime on clinician’s assessment of suicide risk

    Noah C Berman, Alexandra D W Sullivan et al.•ARTICLE•Death Studies•2015•Cited by: 1•References: 1

The present study evaluates how liability influences mental health clinicians' assessment of suicide risk. In this online vignette-based experiment, clinicians (N = 268) were either primed with a legal standard prior to a case vignette or presented the case vignette alone. Clinicians then rated the patient's likelihood of suicide and need for hospitalization. Results indicated that trainees provided significantly lower ratings of suicide risk fol…

  • Psychological Predictors of Anxiety in Response to the H1N1 (Swine Flu) Pandemic

    Open Access•Michael G Wheaton, Jonathan S Abramowitz et al.•ARTICLE•Cognitive Therapy and Research•2012

  • Assessment of obsessive-compulsive symptom dimensions: Development and evaluation of the Dimensional Obsessive-Compulsive Scale.

    Jonathan S Abramowitz, Brett J Deacon et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Assessment•2010

Although several measures of obsessive-compulsive (OC) symptoms exist, most are limited in that they are not consistent with the most recent empirical findings on the nature and dimensional structure of obsessions and compulsions. In the present research, the authors developed and evaluated a measure called the Dimensional Obsessive-Compulsive Scale (DOCS) to address limitations of existing OC symptom measures. The DOCS is a 20-item measure that …
