Revising ruling discourses
Elisabeth Kübler-Ross' pioneering work focused on dying, yet some clinicians persist in prescribing it as a path through grief. We surveyed 964 mental health clinicians who completed a five-section mixed methods survey: two sections assessed knowledge with multiple choice questions and a case study to assess clinicians' knowledge-base and approach to grief/loss in practice. Analysis of four items related to Kübler-Ross' model and 66/962 case stud…

Is College Completion Associated with Better Cognition in Later Life for People Who Are the Least, or Most, Likely to Obtain a Bachelor’s Degree
Results indicate the utility of a CDA perspective for investigating the implications of interconnected early life risk and protective factors for later-life cognition, as well as ways in which college education can both contribute to, as well as mitigate, processes of CDA
What’s in an MSW? Graduate education for public child welfare workers, intention, engagement, and work environment
This study employs a mixed methods analysis of exit survey data gathered from public child welfare employees at their completion of a Title IV-E funded MSW program, distinct because it was initiated during a period of major reform and permitted students to continue employment during their studies. Findings suggest that opportunities for growth and manageable levels of stress were associated with intentions to stay and engagement with the work, re…
Race, Education, and the Treatment of Depression in Nursing Homes
Objectives: We investigate, among older adult nursing home residents diagnosed with depression, whether depression treatment differs by race and schooling, and whether differences by schooling differ by race. We examine whether Blacks and less educated residents are placed in facilities providing less treatment, and whether differences reflect disparities in care. Method: Data from the 2006 Nursing Home Minimum Data Set for 8 states ( n = 124,431…
Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Depression Care in Community-Dwelling Elderly in the United States
Objectives. We investigated racial/ethnic disparities in the diagnosis and treatment of depression among community-dwelling elderly. Methods. We performed a secondary analysis of Medicare Current Beneficiary Survey data (n = 33 708) for 2001 through 2005. We estimated logistic regression models to assess the association of race/ethnicity with the probability of being diagnosed and treated for depression with either antidepressant medication or ps…
Antidepressant Treatment and Adherence to Antiretroviral Medications Among Privately Insured Persons with HIV/Aids
Emergency Room Use by Undocumented Mexican Immigrants
This study examined emergency room use by undocumented Mexican immigrants and their sources of health care information. Thirty-eight percent of the respondents reported that they would use a hospital emergency room (ER) for primary medical care. ER use rates declined with time spent in the United States. Emergency room use rates varied significantly by region. Respondents receiving information from a church reported less ER use, compared to all o…
Substance Abuse and Hospitalization for Mood Disorder Among Medicaid Beneficiaries
Objectives. We compared the influence of substance abuse with that of other comorbidities (e.g., anxiety, HIV) among people with mood disorder (N = 129 524) to explore risk factors for psychiatric hospitalization and early readmission within 3 months of discharge. Methods. After linking Medicaid claims data in 5 states (California, Florida, New Jersey, New York, and Texas) to community-level information, we used logistic and Cox regression to exa…
Adherence to Antidepressant Treatment Among Privately Insured Patients Diagnosed With Depression
BACKGROUND: Antidepressants are effective in treatment of depression, but poor adherence to medication is a major obstacle to effective care. OBJECTIVE: We sought to describe patient and provider level factors associated with treatment adherence. METHODS: This was a retrospective, observational study using medical and pharmacy claims from a large health plan, for services provided between January 2003 and January 2005. We studied a total of 4312 …
Studying Prescription Drug Use and Outcomes With Medicaid Claims Data
Medicaid claims and eligibility data, particularly when linked to other sources of patient-level and contextual information, represent a powerful and under-used resource for health services research on the use and outcomes of prescription drugs. However, their effective use poses many methodological and inferential challenges. This article reviews strengths, limitations, challenges, and recommended strategies in using Medicaid data for research o…
