Anxiety sensitivity, finding the body, and posttraumatic stress disorder in suicide-bereaved treatment-seeking adults
Anxiety sensitivity has important implications for the development and maintenance of PTSD in the suicide bereaved and should be assessed and targeted in suicide postvention. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2024 APA, all rights reserved)
Cultural pathways for suicidal ideation and behaviors
Findings elucidated pathways involving both general distress and cultural factors, and pathways from cultural life events to suicide constructs independent of mental illness-related factors. Findings question utilizing mental illness as a primary suicide driver, make theoretical contributions in refining the cultural theory and model of suicide, and advance understandings of roles of cultural factors in suicide research and practice. (PsycInfo Da…
Cultural versus classic risk and protective factors for suicide
The current study examined the predictive value of cultural versus classic risk and protective factors for suicide in a community sample of 322 ethnic, sexual, and gender minority adults. Cultural factors played a significant and substantial role in predicting suicide attempts (explained 8% of variance in attempts and correctly classified 8.5% of attempters) over and above the classic factors of hopelessness, depression, and reason for living (wh…
A qualitative analysis of suicide risk factors, preferred means, and means restriction feasibility within a homeless shelter environment
Suicide completion rates among homeless individuals are approximately nine times higher than the general population. The purpose of this study was to capture the state of social support among homeless individuals, understand how homeless community members support peers in crisis, examine the awareness of suicidal ideation, identify common methods for suicide, and generate strategies for means restriction within a shelter. Twenty individuals resid…
Social constraints, loss-related factors, depression, and posttraumatic stress in a treatment-seeking suicide bereaved sample
Findings highlight the importance of the interpersonal context of adjustment in suicide postvention. (PsycINFO Database Record
Social support, trans community connectedness, and mental health symptoms among transgender and gender nonconforming adults
For those identifying as transgender or gender nonconforming (TGNC), the support of others can be instrumental in mitigating the challenges associated with cross-gender transition and identification. Social support and connectedness to the TGNC community can positively impact psychological well-being, facilitate resilience, and buffer against external stigmatization, prejudice, and discrimination (Frost & Meyer, 2012; Hendricks & Testa, 2012). Th…
Crisis Intervention
This chapter presents a summary of the historical highlights and the theoretical influences on the development of modern crisis intervention theory that provide the groundwork for our current understanding of crisis intervention. More recent, advanced interventions, such as solution-focused therapy, cognitive therapy, and psychological first aid, are also discussed. A conceptual overview and framework for identifying, assessing, and treating indi…

The relationship between gender-based victimization and suicide attempts in transgender people.
Social constraints, posttraumatic cognitions, and posttraumatic stress disorder in treatment-seeking trauma survivors

Essential clinical and legal issues when working with the suicidal patient
The legal and clinical literatures on the standards of care for adult suicidal patients are reviewed. We discuss the components of an effective risk management approach that balances the need for high-quality care by a reasonable and prudent practitioner with the requirements of court-determined and statutory standards. Through a review of legal theories and an overview of the clinical literature, we detail the essential guidelines for sound asse…
