Re-assessment of schistosomiasis in nine endemic districts with cluster sampling in Sierra Leone
Background Baseline mapping showed that schistosomiasis was highly/moderately endemic in nine districts in Sierra Leone. Mass drug administration (MDA) with praziquantel started in 2009, and after multiple rounds of treatment, an impact assessment was conducted in 2016 followed by a second re-assessment in 2022 using cluster sampling to provide more granular data for refining chiefdom (sub-district) treatment strategies. Methods On average, 20 ru…
Optimism, Response to Treatment of Depression, and Rehospitalization After Coronary Artery Bypass Graft Surgery
OBJECTIVE: Optimism has been associated with a lower risk of rehospitalization after coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery, but little is known about how optimism affects treatment of depression in post-CABG patients. METHODS: Using data from a collaborative care intervention trial for post-CABG depression, we conducted exploratory post hoc analyses of 284 depressed post-CABG patients (2-week posthospitalization score in the 9-item Patient …
Protecting Sleep, Promoting Health in Later Life
OBJECTIVES: To determine in healthy people aged > or = 75 years 1) if restricting time in bed and education in health sleep practices are superior to an attention-only control condition (i.e., education in healthy dietary practices) for maintaining or enhancing sleep continuity and depth over 2.5 years; and 2) if maintenance or enhancement of sleep continuity and depth promotes the maintenance or enhancement of health-related quality of life. MET…
The Impact of Pain and Depression on Recovery After Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting
OBJECTIVE: To describe the relationship between pain and depression on recovery after coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). METHODS: A secondary data analysis on 453 depressed and nondepressed post-CABG patients enrolled in a randomized, controlled, effectiveness trial of telephone-delivered collaborative care for depression. Outcome measures were collected from March 2004 to September 2007 and included pain, physical function, and mood symptom…
Self-Reported Sleep Quality Predicts Poor Cognitive Performance in Healthy Older Adults
This study examined the relation between sleep quality and cognitive performance in older adults, controlling for common medical comorbidities. Participants were community volunteers who, while not selected on the basis of their sleep, did report substantial variability in sleep quality. Good and poor sleepers differed on tests of working memory, attentional set shifting, and abstract problem solving but not on processing speed, inhibitory functi…
Treatment of Complicated Grief
CONTEXT: Complicated grief is a debilitating disorder associated with important negative health consequences, but the results of existing treatments for it have been disappointing. OBJECTIVE: To compare the efficacy of a novel approach, complicated grief treatment, with a standard psychotherapy (interpersonal psychotherapy). DESIGN: Two-cell, prospective, randomized controlled clinical trial, stratified by manner of death of loved one and treatme…
The Daily Life of Complicated Grief Patients—What Gets Missed, What Gets Added
Many patients with complicated grief suffer severe symptoms for several years after the loss, interfering with daily life. We sought to determine which elements of a patient's daily routine were likely to be missed or added. Sixty-four patients completed a diary each evening for 2 weeks. The diary asked whether each of 13 daily life activities were done or missed on that day. Comparisons were made with 64 matched healthy control participants. Pat…
Healthy Older Adults’ Sleep Predicts All-Cause Mortality at 4 to 19 Years of Follow-Up
OBJECTIVE: Evidence concerning whether sleep disturbances in older adults predict mortality is mixed. However, data are limited to self-reported sleep problems and may be confounded with other comorbidities. We examined whether electroencephalographic (EEG) sleep parameters predicted survival time independently of known predictors of all-cause mortality. METHODS: A total of 185 healthy older adults, primarily in their 60s through 80s, with no his…
Stressful Life Events Precede Exacerbations of Multiple Sclerosis
Objective We longitudinally monitored life events and health changes in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) to determine whether stressful events may trigger exacerbation of MS. Methods Twenty-three women with MS were followed for 1 year. Each subject completed the Psychiatric Epidemiologic Research Interview on a weekly basis. Further information on potentially stressful events was acquired using the Life Events and Difficulties Schedule. Neur…
Symptoms of Stress and Depression as Correlates of Sleep in Primary Insomnia
OBJECTIVE: Previous studies have not evaluated the clinical correlates of the electroencephalographic spectral profile in patients with insomnia. In the preliminary study described here, we evaluated the extent to which symptoms of stress and depression are associated with subjective sleep complaints and quantitative measures of sleep in individuals with chronic insomnia. METHODS: Subjects were 14 healthy adults who met criteria for primary insom…
