Difficulties in adherence to social distancing and quarantine during the Covid-19 pandemic
Non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) such as social distancing and quarantine were essential for containing COVID-19 transmission but had adverse effects on mental health and well-being. Migrants were often accused of non-adherence to NPIs, which was assumed to partly explain their higher infection rates compared to non-migrants. However, this perspective overlooked that migrants may have faced greater challenges adhering to interventions due …
Psychological distress, loneliness, and satisfaction with life during the Covid-19 pandemic
Background: The COVID-19 pandemic disproportionately impacted migrants' health and well-being, with some effects becoming evident months into the crisis. Psychological distress, loneliness, and satisfaction with life, which are indicators closely tied to mental health and well-being, were critically affected during the pandemic. However, comparative longitudinal studies of these parameters across migrant and non-migrant population remain scarce. …
Changes in health after a work-related intervention among highly educated migrants in Norway
Our pilot study suggested positive health changes from a work-related intervention in terms of improved general mental health and well-being. Quantitative and qualitative data were complementary. For confirmation of effects, this pilot study should be upscaled with a randomized trial design
Recreational activities and psychological distress during the Covid-19 crisis
These findings suggest that there are links between recreational activities and psychological distress during a crisis, with cultural audience participation possibly reducing distress over time
Including highly educated migrants in academia to improve their health—protocol for a pilot intervention
Introduction: Norway's healthcare system needs a diversified work force to meet societal demands for improved cultural competence. However, many migrants in Norway who were educated as health professions in their home countries are not practicing these professions. This may negatively affect their physical and mental health and hinder their personal social integration. Though good health is often seen as a precondition for work, relevant working …
The association of psychological distress and economic and health worries with tobacco smoking behavior during the Covid-19 pandemic
Smoking was associated with severe psychological distress, advanced age, and hazardous alcohol use at baseline; non-smoking was associated with high education, working from home, and high physical activity. Nevertheless, the smoking rate among individuals experiencing severe psychological distress slightly decreased over the course of the COVID-19 pandemic
Stress and coping strategies among youth during the Covid-19 pandemic
The COVID-19 pandemic caused a worldwide health- and societal crisis. Youth were exposed to enduring stressors. We examined types and load of stressors faced by youth, and their use of coping strategies. A population-based sample within Bergen municipality, Norway (N = 1031, 11–19 years) completed the Response to Stress Questionnaire 9 months into the pandemic. Social stressors were most frequent, with secondary control engagement being the most …
The association between psychological distress and alcohol consumption and physical activity
These findings highlight the substantial increases in risks related to inactivity and alcohol consumption among those with high levels of psychological distress symptoms, and particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, and increase the understanding of factors associated with worries and health behavior
A qualitative study on people with opioid use disorders’ perspectives on smoking and smoking cessation interventions
Experiencing social support, being encouraged to quit smoking, and patients' concerns for their physical health were important reasons for wanting to quit smoking. Smoking cessation interventions based on patient preferences and on the behavior change wheel may enable a higher success rate among patients receiving opioid agonist therapy
Perceived Change in Quality of Life Related to Treatment of Hepatitis C Infection among People with Substance Use Disorder
Background. The hepatitis C virus (HCV) is often associated with people who inject drugs, and with a reduction in quality of life. While earlier forms of HCV treatment had low treatment uptake, newer HCV treatment integrated with opioid maintenance treatment appears to increase treatment uptake among those who inject drugs. The aim was to explore how people who inject drugs perceive changes in quality of life after treatment of HCV infection. Met…
Drug Death-Bereaved Parents’ Perspectives on Family Interactions and Help Needs
Family relations are essential for the bereaved in terms of healing and adjusting to life, especially after experiencing a traumatic death. Although 500 000 people die in drug-related deaths each year, few works focus on family interactions and the help needs of those bereaved by such losses. In this qualitative study, we interviewed 14 parents who had lost their child through a drug-related death. Through a reflexive thematic analysis, we genera…

Background A concern for the COVID-19 measures and the potential long-term consequences the measures may have on physical inactivity and gaming among youth. Objectives Examine the stability and change in internet and offline gaming and the association with physical inactivity among adolescents in Norway during the pandemic. Methods A total of 2940 youth (58% girls) aged 12–19 years participated in an online longitudinal two-wave survey during the…
Folate Status as a Nutritional Indicator among People with Substance Use Disorder; A Prospective Cohort Study in Norway
Substance use disorder (SUD) is associated with poor nutrition. Vitamin B9, or folate, is an important micronutrient for health. The aim of this prospective longitudinal cohort study was to assess serum folate levels among people with SUD and to investigate the impact of factors related to substance use severity on folate status. Participants were recruited from outpatient clinics for opioid agonist therapy (OAT) and municipal health-care clinics…
Experiences of Hope after Treatment of Hepatitis C Infection—A Qualitative Study
The aim of this study was to explore the experiences of hope people had after undergoing treatment for a hepatitis C virus infection (HCV). Between October 2019 and May 2020, 19 one-on-one interviews were conducted with people who inject drugs and had undergone HCV treatment. All participants had completed treatment and were documented as being virus-free. Data were audio recorded and then transcribed verbatim and analysed; a method inspired by r…
The social health domain of people bereaved by a drug-related death and associations with professional help
People bereaved by traumatic deaths are vulnerable to long-lasting impairments in social health, including the quality of social relationships and the capacity to manage their social lives. In this Norwegian study involving 255 participants bereaved by a drug-related death, we aimed to investigate their social health and associations with professional help. The results of a cross-sectional survey showed that participants on average rated their so…
Alcohol Consumption during a Pandemic Lockdown Period and Change in Alcohol Consumption Related to Worries and Pandemic Measures
Whether lockdown related to the COVID-19 pandemic influences alcohol consumption is not well known. This study assesses alcohol consumption and hazardous drinking behavior during the initial phase of pandemic measures in Norway and identifies potential risk factors. A cross-sectional study ( N = 25,708) was conducted in Bergen, Norway, following the first six weeks of strict infection control measures. In a model of self-assessed increased alcoho…

In this population-based study, 24,968 Norwegian inhabitants participated in an electronic questionnaire including structured questions on dietary habits, emo…
The Effect of Physiotherapy Group Intervention in Reducing Pain Disorders and Mental Health Symptoms among Syrian Refugees
Chronic pain is common among refugees, and often related to mental health problems. Its management, however, is often challenging. A randomized waitlist-controlled trial was designed to study the effect of group physiotherapy activity and awareness intervention (PAAI) on reducing pain disorders, and secondarily improving mental health, among Syrian refugees. A total of 101 adult Syrian refugees suffering from chronic pain were randomized to eithe…
Caries experience and oral health related quality of life in a cohort of Ugandan HIV-1 exposed uninfected children compared with a matched cohort of HIV unexposed uninfected children
The prevalence of untreated caries in primary teeth and quality of life impacts was high in this study population. HIV-1 exposed uninfected children were not more likely than HUU children to experience dental caries or have impaired oral health related quality of life. Given the global expansion of the HEU child population, the present findings indicating no adverse effect of pre- and post-natal HIV-1 exposure on caries in deciduous teeth are rea…

Infant feeding among HIV-positive mothers and the general population mothers
In many respects, HIV-positive mothers fed their infants less favourably than mothers in the general population, with potentially detrimental effects on both the child's nutrition and the risk of HIV transmission. Mixed feeding and pre-lacteal feeding were widespread. Breastfeeding duration was shorter among HIV-positive mothers. Higher educational level and being socio-economically better off were associated with more beneficial infant feeding p…
