Oral Nicotine Product Use in Emerging Adults
BACKGROUND: Sales, marketing, and use of nicotine pouches have grown substantially in the US, yet understanding of emerging adults' use of these products is limited. OBJECTIVES: The present study examined sociodemographic characteristics associated with pouch use, pouch use frequency and e-cigarette attempts, and nicotine withdrawal and dependence, cannabis, and alcohol use among students using different combinations of nicotine products. METHODS…
Need Frustration and E-Cigarette Use and Dependence Among College Students
Background: The prevalence and dependence of e-cigarettes have increased among young adult college students in recent years. Though several independent risk factors for e-cigarette use and dependence have been identified, research employing theory-informed models to predict e-cigarette use and dependence is limited. Objectives: Using Self Determination Theory (SDT), e-cigarette use and dependence may be understood as stemming from need frustratio…

Emerging Adults’ Experiences with E-Cigarette Cessation
Background: The use of electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) is one of the most common substance use behaviors in college students, yet most individuals show some interest in quitting. The current study added to the limited literature on ENDS cessation by examining readiness to quit and the use and perceived efficacy of ENDS cessation methods in a heterogeneous sample of college students. Methods: Students 18-24 years in Psychology courses …
Faculty-student rapport, student engagement, and approaches to collegiate learning
Students value a close, supportive relationship with their professors, which has been shown to enhance their learning in higher education. However, more needs to be known about how quality faculty-student relationships shape students’ engagement and approaches to learning in higher education. In a diverse sample of 966 undergraduates from two different institutions of higher education, the current study explored the relationship between faculty-s…

Change in parental and peer relationship quality during emerging adulthood
We report on two longitudinal studies, where we examined how stability and change in attachment to parents and peers from the first to last year of college were associated with changes in theoretically relevant outcomes. As expected, students with consistently secure parental and peer attachment evidenced the best academic, social, and emotional functioning overall. Participants with "stable secure" parental attachment reported significant increa…
Effects of relationship education on emerging adults' relationship beliefs and behaviors
In this multisite study, we used a randomized controlled trial to examine how a relationship education intervention affected emerging adults' maladaptive relationship beliefs, mutuality, relationship decision making, relationship quality, and psychological distress. In addition, we explored whether one intervention modality (i.e., facilitated group discussion) was more/less effective than another (i.e., self‐facilitated online) and whether there …
Help seeking and social competence mediate the parental attachment–college student adjustment relation
This short‐term longitudinal study investigated whether attitudes about academic help seeking, social competence, and self‐compassion mediated the relations between parental attachment and college student adjustment. Two hundred and four first‐year students completed measures of parental attachment and the proposed mediators at the beginning of their first semester. At the end of the semester, students reported on their academic, social, and pers…
Does the Inclusion Criterion of Women’s Aggression as Opposed to Their Victimization Result in Samples That Differ on Key Dimensions of Intimate Partner Violence
This study is among the first attempts to address a frequently articulated, yet unsubstantiated claim that sample inclusion criteria based on women's physical aggression or victimization will yield different distributions of severity and type of partner violence and injury. Independent samples of African American women participated in separate studies based on either inclusion criterion of women's physical aggression or victimization. Between-gro…
