  • Baltic abstract nouns with -i-s and Slavic with -ьje (IE * -iyo- )

    Open Access•Norbert Ostrowski•ARTICLE•Baltistica•2025

Lithuanian abstract nouns of the type plõnis (gen. sg. plõnio) ‘thinness’ (← Lith. plónas ‘thin’) are a continuation of IE neuter adjectives with the suffix *-iyo-. A syntactic analysis of Lithuanian neuter adjectives allows us to assume that the change *-iyo- => -i- is the result of the following phonetic change: plónas ‘thin’ → neutr. *plān-ìja- > (loss of /a/) *plānī- > *plāni- > masc. plõnis ‘thinness’. The presented explanation sheds light o…

  • On the Lithuanian privative prefix ap

    Open Access•Norbert Ostrowski•ARTICLE•Baltistica•2024

This paper discusses two examples of Lithuanian verbs with the privative prefix ap-, which is a continuation of the IE ablative adverb *h2épo ‘from’. The examples discussed are apgauti ‘to deceive’ and apakti ‘to go blind’. Parallels in other languages can help to establish these verbs’ original meanings: Lat. dēcipere ‘to deceive’ and Fr. aveugle ‘blind’

  • Old Latvian Comparative Constructions

    Open Access•Norbert Ostrowski•ARTICLE•Baltu filoloģija•2021

What functioned as the primary comparative construction in seventeenth-century Latvian was a construction with the conjunction nekā ‘than’ (literally: ‘not like’), which typologically represents the so-called conjoined comparative in Stassen’s terminology (Stassen 1985). This is consistent with the state of affairs evidenced in sixteenth-century Lithuanian, where, as primary comparative constructions of inequality (COI), we find constructions wit…

    Norbert Ostrowski•ARTICLE•Indogermanische Forschungen•2021

The Lithuanian-Latvian illative was formed from the IE accusativus directivus and the local postposition *-ā́. Traces of the postponed *-ā́ have been preserved in yrà ‘is, are; OLith. there is, there are’

  • Old Lithuanian ischtirra ‘found out’ and some notes on the development of Baltic preterit

    Open Access•Norbert Ostrowski•ARTICLE•Baltistica•2019

The starting point for our considerations on the development of the Baltic preterite is the Old Lithuanian preterite /ištira:/ ‘found out’, etymologically connected to týrė ‘examined’. In form, /ištira:/ and týrė match the Old Church Slavonic otьre (thematic aorist) and trь (sigmatic aorist). This, in turn, is an argument for the hypothesis proposed by Daniel Petit (2004) on the origin of the lengthening in the Baltic preterite. The second part o…

  • “Natural coordination” and the origin of the Lithuanian conjunction beĩ ‘and’

    Open Access•Norbert Ostrowski•ARTICLE•Baltistica•2017

Productivity of the Lithuanian conjunction beĩ ‘and’, marker of so called „natural coordination”, is strictly connected to the area of Lithuania Minor (former East Prussia). Lithuanian beĩ comes from conflation of the common Baltic conjunction bè ‘and’ and an additive particle ir ‘also’. The conflated form *beir has been further reduced to beĩ in accordance with Lithuanian phonotactic rules that do not tolerate group VRR (V = Vocal, R = Resonant)…

  • Once again on the neuter pronoun -ti ‘this’

    Open Access•Norbert Ostrowski•ARTICLE•Baltistica•2014

    Ostrowski (spausdinama) yra pasiūlęs alomorfus -ǀtai-g : -t# ir -ǀkai-g : -k# (plg. slie. beǀtai-g : bèt’ / bèt ir slie. juǀkai-g : jùk’ / jùk) aiškinti kaip galutinio dvibalsio monoftongizacijos rezultatas, t. y. *be-ǀtai ‘ir tai’ > *beǀtie > beti > bèt’ > bèt. Monoftongizacijos trūkumas beǀtai-g ir juǀkai-g formose aiškinama dviejų procesų relatyvine chronologija: 1) nekirčiuoto /a/ išnykimu prieš -# ir -g(i), 2) monoftongizacija /ai/ > /ie/. A…

  • From focus marker to comparative suffix – the original character of the Lithuanian comparative -iaũs

    Norbert Ostrowski•ARTICLE•Historical Linguistics•2013

The Lithuanian comparative suffix -iaũ(s), e.g. OLith. geriaus ‘better’ / Modern Lith. geriaũ, has risen from a postpositive contrastive focus particle -jaũ used in the function of ‘emphatic assertion of identity’ (see König 1991). A final consonant /-s/ in -iaũ-s is an etymologically heterogeneous element, appearing optionally in such lexemes as Lith. dial. nèt-s ‘even’ : nèt ‘even’ < OLith. ne-te, OLith. tačiau-s ‘however, but’ : tačiaũ ‘howeve…

  • Old Lithuanian interrogative particle biau

    Open Access•Norbert Ostrowski•ARTICLE•Baltistica•2012

Postpositioned particle jaũ, serving in Old Lithuanian as a focus marker, may have also followed question words. Paper presents the origin of the OLith. interrogative particle biau as a shortened form of be-jau (LKŽ 1, 735), cf. a similar process in Lith. niaũ-gi ‘really?’

This paper is devoted to the Lithuanian iteratives with the suffix -ėti (e. g. plýšti «to tear», intransitive — pléišėti «to tear slowly», intransitive), derived originally from the preterite of iterative and causative formations in -yti, developed with a morpheme -jā. The origin of this class of verbs casts some light on the history of the Baltic imperfect, which continues the imperfect of iteratives in -āje / o
