Intercultural insights on the impact of different non-idealized models on men's body image and advertising perceptions
This experiment with 363 Irish and Flemish men aged 19 to 30 years ( M = 23.56, SD = 2.36) investigated exposure to different male model ads (i.e. muscular, slim, plus-size, overall diversity, and no models) on well-being (i.e. body image, low body fat and muscularity attitudes, self-objectification, and self-esteem) and advertising outcomes (i.e. ad attitudes, brand attitudes, and purchase intent). BeautyInspo
The current literature on nonidealized media content (i.e., content that presents media models that do not follow traditional beauty standards) rarely includes novel positive body image outcomes, such as a broad conceptualization of beauty. Moreover, little is known about more positively oriented explanatory mechanisms, such as inspiration (i.e., feeling inspired by media to adopt a broader inner conception of beauty). Therefore, the current cros…
Researching the Malleability Narrative on Professional Ideals
Research has rarely looked into links between adolescents’ media use, internal attribution of professional success, and well-being. The current study among 940 late adolescents (M = 17.21 years old, SD = .94; 60.9% girls) found that exposure to malleable professional ideals in traditional as well as social media was positively related to internal attribution of professional success, which was in turn positively related to professional performance…
Filters and fillers
This study examined whether adolescents’ use of (a) body and (b) face filters was related to acceptance of cosmetic surgery (ACS) (i.e. intrapersonal and social acceptance, and intention). Attention was paid to possible differences according to adolescents’ (1) sex, (2) self-esteem, and (3) pubertal timing. A cross-sectional online survey among 333 Flemish adolescents (Mage = 16.06, SD = 1.45) with 71.2% girls was used to test the hypothesized mo…

Romantic relationship commitment and the threat of alternatives on social media
Although previous findings suggest a link between adults' use of social networking sites (SNS) and relationship commitment, research has been lacking. This study of 427 emerging and young adults (aged 18–32 years, 71.20% female) indicated that exposure to alternative partners on SNS was indirectly related to relationship commitment through the pursuing of alternative partners on SNS. The more frequently they were exposed to alternative partners o…
