  • A national test of dyslexia

Open Access•Mads Poulsen, Holger Juul et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Dyslexia•2023

Different definitions and tests of dyslexia can cause unfairness and make life difficult for people with dyslexia as well as for the professionals. In 2012, the Danish government decided to support the fight against dyslexia. The government issued a public tender for the development of “a standardized, electronically administered test of dyslexia for use [...] from primary Grade 3 and up through all educational levels to 5-year university educati…

  • Combining morphological and contextual strategy instruction to enhance word learning

Open Access•Anne‐Mette Veber Nielsen, Anne-Mette Veber Nielsen et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

Effects of a 28-lesson teacher-delivered vocabulary program aimed at enhancing word learning in Danish 4th graders are reported. The program had a combined focus on morphological and contextual strategies that may support word learning during independent reading of school texts. Students in experimental classes progressed more than controls on trained skills, and they scored significantly higher on most posttest measures of word learning. Unexpec…

  • Online activation of L1 Danish orthography enhances spoken word recognition of Swedish

Open Access•Anja Schüppert, Johannes C Ziegler et al.•ARTICLE•Nordic Journal of Linguistics•2022

It has been reported that speakers of Danish understand more Swedish than vice versa. One reason for this asymmetry might be that spoken Swedish is closer to written Danish than vice versa. We hypothesise that literate speakers of Danish use their orthographic knowledge of Danish to decode spoken Swedish. To test this hypothesis, first-language (L1) Danish speakers were confronted with spoken Swedish in a translation task. Event-related brain pot…

  • Context clue types and their prevalence in texts for Danish 3rd and 4th graders

Hanne Trebbien Daugaard, Anne‐Mette Veber Nielsen et al.•ARTICLE•Language and Education•2020

Research suggests that readers learn about word meanings from the various contexts of words in texts. Therefore, context clue instruction is often recommended as a way of boosting students’ word learning skills. Ideally, such instruction should focus on context clue types that are common in authentic texts. We examined the prevalence of context clue types in authentic texts for Danish 3rd and 4th graders, focusing on contexts surrounding so-calle…

  • Length effects in pseudo-word spelling

Open Access•Holger Juul, Dorthe Klint Petersen•ARTICLE•Annals of Dyslexia•2017

  • Grammatical awareness and the spelling of inflectional morphemes in Danish

    Open Access•Holger Juul•ARTICLE•International Journal of Applied…•2005•Cited by: 2•References: 1

Danish sixth-graders (N = 32, mean age 12:7 years) were asked to spell words with inflectional endings which had grammatically unique but phonemically inconsistent spellings: present tense verbs and present participles. As found in a previous Danish study using pseudo-words (Juul and Elbro in press), such spellings were a major spelling problem. The present study shows that in spite of a weak intercorrelation, scores for both types of inflections…
