VOT in the Production of Initial Stops in Isolated Words by Slovenian Speakers of English
This study examines Voice Onset Time (VOT) in word-initial stops produced by six Slovenian (L1) students of English (L2) with C1/C2-level proficiency. Using acoustic and linear mixed-model analysis, the research compares the production of these stops in both languages. The results confirm Slovenian as a lead (for /b d g/) vs short-lag language (for /p t k/). In their L2 English, the speakers establish new phonetic categories by lengthening VOT in…

Errors as indicators of writing task difficulty at the Slovene general matura in English
Task difficulty is an important but complex phenomenon in Applied Linguistics, for which there is relatively little empirical research. This article discusses approaches to defining task difficulty and focuses on objective task difficulty derived from ratings of performances and on difficulty derived from an error count in the performances, thus taking errors as indicators of writing task difficulty. Errors are described in terms of the Scope–Sub…
Geoenergy potential of the Croatian part of Pannonian Basin
Presented work focuses on the importance of unconformity that separates the Neogene infill from older Palaeozoic and Mesozoic rocks in the Croatian part of Pannonian Basin. Structure map of this horizon nearly represents the thickness map of the Neogene and Quaternary basin fill. Rock formations just below the unconformity are significantly weathered, which results in favourable petrophysical properties, making them interesting from the aspect of…
The prosody of focus
The article presents an approach to information structure that marks focused or topicalized syntactic constituents with the features [foc] and [top], and assumes that the assignment of these information structure features is reflected in prosody. The experimental study measures the fundamental frequency of various Slovenian sentences to identify the characteristic contours of the non-contrastive, contrastive, and verum focus. The findings are com…

The article presents a study of a CEFR B2-level reading subtest that is part of the Slovenian national secondary school leaving examination in English as a foreign language, and compares the test-taker actual performance (objective difficulty) with the test-taker and expert perceptions of item difficulty (subjective difficulty). The study also analyses the test-takers’ comments on item difficulty obtained from a while-reading questionnaire. The r…
Validating the Slovenian national alignment to Cefr
The paper examines the results of the CEFR alignment project for the Slovenian national examinations in English. The authors aim to validate externally the standard-setting procedures by adopting a socio-cognitive model of validation (Khalifa & Weir, 2009; Weir, 2005) to analyse the scoring, context and cognitive validity of three reading subtests: the Slovenian B2 national examination and the international examinations FCE and CAE, aligned with …
In the Eyes of the Collapsing Empire
It is of critical importance for every newly established state to receive international recognition. The Soviet Union strongly supported the unity and territorial integrity of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia and considered the latter’s break-up within the context of its own disintegration. The article sets out Slovenia’s efforts to gain Russian recognition of Slovenian independence and sovereignty, as described in Soviet and Russian …
