How multimodal GenAI enhances EFL learners’ language achievement
The incorporation of multimodal Generative AI (GenAI) into teaching is transforming how students engage with language beyond conventional text-based instruction. Although previous studies have examined the instructional benefits of AI-based language learning, less attention has been paid to the emotional and psychological mechanisms through which multimodal GenAI affects EFL learners’ language achievement. To address this gap, and drawing on Self…
Effects of using data-driven and generative AI-assisted instructions on learning multiword constructions in written academic English
With a pretest/posttest/delayed posttest design, this quasi-experimental study compares the effectiveness of corpus use versus generative AI (GenAI) use in helping undergraduate students learn multiword constructions (MWCs) in written academic English and examines the moderating effects of learners’ learning styles. Six intact writing classes with a total of 210 students were assigned to one of three instructional groups with each group including…
The effects of incorporating mindset intervention in L2 English writing on Chinese college EFL students’ learning engagement and writing performance
Enhancing Verb‐Noun Collocation Learning among Chinese EFL Learners
This study investigates the effects of Cognitive Linguistics (CL)‐inspired, Generative AI (GenAI)‐assisted, and traditional instruction on Chinese EFL learners' knowledge and retention of English verb‐noun collocations. A quasi‐experiment was conducted involving three intact classes with a total of 133 second‐year college students randomly assigned to one of the three instructional treatments. Learners’ learning of verb‐noun collocations was asse…

Academic English verbs across disciplines
Using Davies's (2008-) Corpus of Contemporary American English's academic English section as data, this study investigates, both quantitatively and qualitatively, the cross-discipline usage patterns of the 554 verbs from Gardner and Davies's (2014) core Academic Vocabulary List (AVL). The results of a series of statistical analyses (e.g., Chi-square and cluster analysis) indicate that 41% of the verbs displayed a low dispersion across the discipl…
A multi-dimensional comparison of the effectiveness and efficiency of association measures in collocation extraction
Because of the ubiquity and importance of collocations in language use/learning, how to effectively and efficiently identify collocations has been a topic of interest. Although some studies have evaluated many of the existing association measures (AMs) used in the automatic identification of collocations, the results so far have been inconsistent and unclear due to various limitations of the existing studies. Hence, this study makes a multi-dimen…
Calling for More Consistency, Refinement, and Critical Consideration in the Use of Syntactic Complexity Measures for Writing
In the past two decades, syntactic complexity measures (e.g. the length or number of words per clause/t-unit/sentences and number of clauses per t-unit/sentence, and types of clauses used) have been widely used to determine and benchmark language proficiency development in speaking and writing. (Norris and Ortega 2009; Lu 2011). However, the results of some recent studies (e.g. Lu 2011; Bulté and Housen 2014; Crossley and McNamara 2014) have rais…
Evaluating popular online English-Chinese dictionaries in China by applying Lew and Szarowska’s (2017) evaluation framework
By applying Lew and Szarowska’s (2017) evaluation framework and methodology (with a few methodological enhancements made), this study evaluated six popular online English-Chinese dictionaries in China and produced some useful findings. First, Lew and Szarowska’s framework and methodology proved very successful in this study, demonstrating their viability in evaluating online bilingual dictionaries, although a few aspects where enhancements could …
A Synergetic Linguistic Study on Compounding Propensity in technical English
This paper investigates the compounding propensity in technical English by the Theory of Synergetic Linguistics. It focuses on the dependence of compound number on the properties of length, frequency and polylexy of word stems. A technical English corpus JDEST was used and a set of Visual Foxpro programs were specifically written for processing the corpus and obtaining the data automatically. The results confirm the respective hypotheses of depen…
