Human or Machine? Evaluating Second Language Speaking Performance in Paired Discussions with a Large Language Model-Driven Spoken Dialogue System vs. a Human Interlocutor
The use of large language models (LLMs) in language assessment, particularly in spoken dialogue systems (SDSs) for assessing speaking, remains at an early stage. This study explored the use of an LLM-driven SDS to assess second language speaking ability. Using a within-participant design, we compared the paired discussion performance of 30 participants interacting with a self-built LLM-driven SDS (E-Talk) versus a human interlocutor, focusing on …
The human–machine correlation in automated speech evaluation
This three-level meta-analysis investigated the human–machine correlation of automated speech evaluation (ASE) systems. Sixty-seven studies representing 392 effect sizes were included. The results indicated a positive overall correlation ( r = .654, p r = .784), followed by overall speaking proficiency ( r = .686), fluency ( r = .618), pronunciation ( r = .606), content ( r = .574), and grammar and vocabulary ( r = .499). A clear upward trend was…
Exploring the influence of living arrangements on mental health among adolescents during the Covid-19 pandemic
The findings underscore the nuanced relationship between living arrangements and mental health among adolescents. This study provides valuable insights into the role parents play in the mental health of young people during the COVID-19 pandemic
The Effect of Alignment on the Listening and Speaking Continuation Task
This study aims to examine the effect of alignment on the listening and speaking continuation task (LSCT). A total of 47 Chinese L2 English learners were recruited as participants for the study. They were divided into two groups and were instructed to complete two separate continuation tasks with different input languages (English and Chinese). The scripts of oral continuation performed by the participants were analyzed from four aspects: word fr…
The Potential Environmental Impact of PAHs on Soil and Water Resources in Air Deposited Coal Refuse Sites in Niangziguan Karst Catchment, Northern China
Long-term deposition of coal spoil piles may lead to serious pollution of soil and water resources in the dumping sites and surrounding areas. Karst aquifers are highly sensitive to environmental pollution. In this study, the occurrence and release/mobilization of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in coal waste and coal spoils fire gas mineral (CSFGM) were evaluated by field and indoor investigations at Yangquan city, one of the major coal …
Climate control on the palaeo-lake evolution in the southern Datong Basin, North China
