Intersectional approaches to anti-sexism and anti-racism in German universities
In this article, we analyze anti-sexism and anti-racism work at universities from the perspective of institutional analysis. Our theoretical background is based in feminist institutional theory. The websites of a Higher Education Institution are viewed as a self-image of the university consisting of information on anti-discrimination on campus. The case study sheds light on broader anti-discrimination work at European Research Area (ERA). The cha…
Intersectional Gender Equality Challenges – A Review of Gender Equality Research Conducted in Fennoscandian Arctic Academia
Context-specific GE knowledge is essential for epistemic contribution, nuanced understanding, and practical GE work in the Arctic HEIs. However, there is a shortage of research regarding gender equality (GE) in these institutions. We explored GE in HEI, and conducted a review on the Scopus database focusing on GE research done in the Nordic countries of Norway, Sweden and Finland. The aim is to explore the produced GE research in an HEI context c…
Gender Gap in Entrepreneurial Potential in Finland and Reflecting Its Underlying Causes
The gender gap in entrepreneurship is a widely recognized phenomenon meaning that women are less likely to start a business than men. However, increased gender equality is believed to remove barriers to female entrepreneurship. We used secondary data collected for Global Entrepreneurship Monitor from 2003, 2009, 2015, and 2021 to get closer to this phenomenon in Finland, one of the most equal countries in the world. The aim of the study was to cl…
Vulnerable bodily integrity
Our focus is on under-recognised experiences of sexual violence among adolescent girls in residential care institutions in Finland. Sexual violations of the girls’ bodily integrity were connected to transactional sex and trauma-based behaviour. The girls’ experiences of sexual violence partly appeared to be internalised sexism, a form of collective social violence manifested on a personal level. However, if this phenomenon is discussed only as se…
Reconfigurings of Non-violence as a Matter of Sustainability and Response-ability
In this paper, we explore non-violence and the responsibility for non-violence inspired by Karen Barad’s work on the material–discursive notion of response-ability. Our analysis, by way of thinking with theory, is based on a careful engagement with the life of one woman, Lena, as told by her in writing and interviews between the years 2007 and 2015. Based on her talk about violence and non-violence in her life, we produced three stories of non-vi…
