  • Dynamics of Cultural Value of Non-Pastoral Activities among the Daasanach in East Africa

    Open Access•Toru Sagawa•ARTICLE•Nomadic Peoples•2021•Cited by: 1

Many studies have focused on livelihood diversification among pastoral people in East Africa. The central theme of research on livelihood diversification is to clarify the economic background, contribution and consequences of non-pastoral activities for each household. However, pastoralists diversify their livelihoods not only out of economic necessity, but also by considering the cultural value and social relations, and the diversification proce…

  • Food Security Policy and the Suddenly Changing Livelihood of Agro-Pastoralists in Southwestern Ethiopia

    Open Access•Toru Sagawa•ARTICLE•Journal of African Studies•2019

  • Automatic Rifles and Social Order Amongst the Daasanach of Conflict-ridden East Africa

    Open Access•Toru Sagawa•ARTICLE•Nomadic Peoples•2010•Cited by: 7•References: 3

It has been reported that the proliferation of automatic rifles in East Africa has increased the seriousness of conflicts during the past thirty years in East African pastoral societies. Some researchers insist that pastoral societies have been inundated with escalating levels of violence. This violence is associated with young men who have new types of firearms that are more sophisticated and deadly than traditional weapons and that destroy soci…

  • Externally Organized Peace Meeting among Pastoral Groups in the Conflict Zone of North East Africa

    Open Access•Toru Sagawa•ARTICLE•Journal of African Studies•2007

Many inter-ethnic conflicts have been arising among pastoralists, who live in the border area of Ethiopia, Kenya and Sudan. Recently, external actors have seriously started to intervene in this area to mitigate such conflicts and construct peace. Therefore researchers are expected to make discreet efforts to examine outside interventions so that they could give positive influences to local communities. In this paper, I focused on two peace meetin…
