  • Diversity, equity, inclusion, and sustainability (Deis) in language education

    Subhan Zein•ARTICLE•AILA Review•2026

The discourse of sustainability has long been associated with environmental protection, but recent additions include economic health and societal equity. As an effort to advance the discourse of sustainability, this Special Issue views diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) as indispensable for sustainability. There is no sustainability without celebration of diversity, and there is no sustainability without equity and inclusion. Contributors to …

  • “Discovering World Englishes has lessened my burden in English language education”

    Adriana González, Subhan Zein•ARTICLE•AILA Review•2026

The growth of World Englishes (WE) in Applied Linguistics has provided important contributions to English language education and teacher professional development. Critical frameworks in WE have raised awareness and inspired knowledge creation about linguistic diversity in contexts where local teachers have been marginalized for being non-native speakers of English. Contributing to the understanding of English use and English language education dy…

  • Diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in English as a subject in basic education (Esbe) in Asean

    Subhan Zein•ARTICLE•AILA Review•2026

This study employs a multiple case study design to examine diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in English as a subject in basic education (ESBE) in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). The study shows that DEI in ESBE in ASEAN has shown some progress, and yet challenges abound. ASEAN nations struggle for balanced basic education curricula, with all ASEAN nations committing to teaching national languages and English while leaving…

  • World Englishes as an ideological movement in applied linguistics

    Open Access•Subhan Zein•ARTICLE•World Englishes•2025•References: 4

Early world Englishes publications did not explicitly use an ideological frame of reference, even though much of their argument was essentially ideological. Neither did those walking in the footsteps of world Englishes pioneers; some opted for a discursive approach instead, while others used the framework of language attitudes. Indeed, world Englishes, albeit becoming a joint interdisciplinary academic endeavour in which various fields have made …

  • English, multilingualism and globalisation in Indonesia

    Open Access•Subhan Zein•ARTICLE•English Today•2019

Indonesia is the second most linguistically diverse nation in the world. It has established its reputation as one of the largest markets of English language education. This paper examines the context of multilingualism in Indonesia in relation to the increasingly dominant role of English from my viewpoint as a researcher. I begin the paper by outlining how Indonesia is currently adapting to the role of English as a global language. I then discuss…

  • Access policy on English language education at the primary school level in the Asean Plus Three member states

    Subhan Zein•ARTICLE•Asian Englishes•2017

With English becoming increasingly important for achieving success in twenty-first-century global competition, policies to introduce the language to primary school children have proliferated in Asia, including the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) Plus Three member states. Although there have been attempts to evaluate English language-in-education policies at the primary school level in Asia, no cross-national study has systematical…

  • Improving the quality of English language teacher educators

    Subhan Zein, Sivpheng Haing•ARTICLE•Asian Englishes•2017

Despite the increasing attention to teacher education, there is little, if any, literature on English language teaching quality of teacher educators. This occurs even more so in terms of policy where the focus on teachers is still overwhelmingly dominant. This study investigated ways of improving the quality of teacher educators working in an English department at a university in Cambodia. The findings of the study suggest the significant importa…
