Quartzite complexities: Non-destructive analysis of bifacial points from Västerbotten, Sweden
Northern Fennoscandia is a geologically complex region affected by both glacial and postglacial processes. Quartzite was a key material type utilized by hunter-gatherers in Northern Sweden around the period 4 000 – 2 000 BP, and is thus critical to the understanding of raw material procurement and material flow within the region. However, there is a severe lack of methodological development in the characterization of these materials, and provenan…
Near infrared and hyperspectral studies of archaeological stratigraphy and statistical considerations
The paper proposes a methodology based on near‐infrared (NIR) spectrometry for studying stratigraphy and depth profiles in archaeological excavations. The NIR spectra can be used to describe and complement the wet chemical analysis. Soil samples were collected from a 0.8 m deep stratigraphy of a Neolithic site that were analyzed by three different NIR instrumentations. Phosphate‐ and magnetic susceptibility and inductively‐coupled plasma mass spe…
Hyperspectral Imaging for Characterization of Lithic Raw Materials: The Case of a Mesolithic Dwelling in Northern Sweden
This study proposes a method for the classification of lithic raw materials by means of hyperspectral imaging, a non-destructive fast analytical technique. The information potential of this approach was tested on a dwelling site dated to mid-late Mesolithic (7200–5800 BP) at Lillsjön, Ångermanland, Sweden. A dataset of lithic tools and flakes (2612 objects) made of quartz and quartzite, was analyzed using a shortwave infrared hyperspectral imagin…
Characterization of building materials by means of spectral remote sensing: The example of Carcassonne's defensive wall (Aude, France)
Principal component analysis
